Sailing around Aeolian Islands

If you are looking for a great place to sail in Italy, Aeolian Islands are definitely way to go. These

vulcanic islands are located just north of Sicily in the Tyrrhenian Sea. There are seven islands, the

biggest one is called Lipari, and that's why the islands are sometimes referred as Lipari Islands.

The other islands are Vulcano, Salina, Stromboli, Filicudi, Alicudi and Panarea. The Aeolian

Islands are listed by UNESCO as World Heritage Site, and because of that there are strict rules on

renovating existing buildings, and even stricter are the new buildings’ restrictions.

The sea surrounding the Aeolian Islands is  beautiful, warm, clear and blue with some splendid

views, beaches, volcanoes, castles, little towns and everything else to make your view and sailing

experience as beautiful as possible.

Vulcano

Let's start with island closest to coast of Sicily, Vulcano. As you might guessed by its name,

Vulcano island is dominated by a vulcano with an altitude of 500 meters, and climping up is worth

just to see the spectacular view from the top. Due to thermal activity Vulcano has lots of thermal

baths, mud baths and hot springs resorts. Also, due to vulcanic activity Vulcano has a stunning

black sand beach called Sabbie Nere, which you have to see to believe.

Lipari

Lipari is the largest and most populated island in the group. Island's most popular beach is located

here, the beach Spiaggia Bianca. Other than beautiful beaches, Lipari's most famous sites are the

archeologic museum Eoliano in which you can see lots of archaeological items found on the

island. Town of Lipari is also home to the catedral and the castle built in middle ages.

Stromboli

Island of Stromboli is dominated by a single large vulcano that is still active. Stromboli is popular

for its magma spurring displays, especially at night. Mt Stromboli releases lava daily, and visitors can

witness this from safety distance. Surrounding waters are deep and they attract many divers from all

over the world. All beaches here are made of black vulcanic sand, and a whole island is easy to

walk around.

Salina

Second largest island, and the greenest of them. Salina has over 400 different plants species. Ideal

for spending your holidays in a country side, long walking in the nature, and taking a break in one of the many bays or beaches.

Panarea

Panarea is the second smallest island of Aeolian Islands. Panarea is very popular among younger

people for very alive nightlife. After one 2011's famous news article, the island has become very

popular holiday destination for celebrities and famous people. Panerea’s second biggest tourist site

are its scuba diving locations for beginners and professional divers.

Last two islands are Filicudi are Alicudi. They are smaller, less inhabited and less visited. You can

sail to them to get away from crowds of people or take a relaxing dinner in an authentic old

environment.
