While traveling through the province of Alsace in France during the summer of 2003, I learned about the grave of Lt. John Grant Rahill, who had served briefly as the company commander of B Company, 179th Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Division in 1944 and who is buried today in a cornfield outside of the small Alsatian town of Hochfelden. To learn more about Lt. Rahill and his military service, I immediately began researching the history of B Company of the 179th Infantry Regiment; I hope to conclude my work soon.

This site has thus been created in a final effort to locate anyone with information concerning B Company of the 179th Infantry Regiment in 1944. I hope to locate any veterans who served with B Company of the 179th IR in 1944. I am also interested in seeing any diaries, letters, memoirs, or photos that are related to B Company of the 179th IR in 1944. Since I want to learn more about the general experiences of the men who served of B Company, it is not important whether veterans of the company knew Lt. Rahill or not. I have already located and interviewed several veterans of B Company, but I hope to locate and speak with as many of them as possible before I conclude this research project.

To assist the visitor of this site, the history of B Company and the 179th Infantry Regiment during the months of February to December 1944 are presented here. Each month can be examined on this site to learn more about the daily events of the company and the regiment as well as the officers who served in 1944. Most all of the information presented here was taken from the 1944 Morning Reports of B Company and the 1944 War Journals of the 179th Infantry Regiment.

Anyone with any information whatsoever about B Company of the 179th Infantry Regiment during 1944 (no matter how apparently insignificant) is invited to contact me directly at the following mailing address, phone number, or e-mail address:
