ECUADOR The country of Ecuador is beautiful country who's motto is God, homeland, and liberty and is home to 13,810,000 people according to the 2007 census bureau. The capital of Ecuador is Quito which resides at 9°S and 78.21°W, however the largest city of Ecuador is Guayaquil which has a population of 1,986,000. According to research done, the official language of the country Ecuador is Spanish, plus the currency that was once used was official Ecuador currency. However, on January 9, 2000, the administration of the governmental department decided to official adopt the United States of America currency, and this currency is still being used to today. Ecuador gained their independence on October 9, 1822 from the country of Spain, and Guayaquil became the first city adopted into the country. Ecuador does live under a democracy type government leadership, in addition the current president of Ecuador is Rafael Correa who was elected president on September 30, 2007. The governmental system of Ecuador provides the four-year term system just as the United State does. Capital of Ecuador (Quito) Quito the capital of Ecuador and within the province of Pichincha, also known as San Francisco de Quito which is located north central Ecuador in the Guayllabamba River Basin which is near the Andes Mountains. Quito, Ecuador has an elevation of 9300 feet above sea level which makes Quito the second largest country at elevation in the world. Quito also has a population of 1,842,201 according to their district. Moreover, the climate of Quito. Ecuador is a labeled as a wet-dry climate, meaning the city only has two common seasons, summer and winter. The summers which are the dry season are known to be very warm topping out at temperatures of about 85°F. However, since Quito, Ecuador is very near the Andes Mountains, the air at night becomes very cool and breezy. The temperature at night reaches a low of around 45°F, so it is very common to see people walk around with light jackets throughout the day. Quito, Ecuador does have the normal upper, middle, and lower economic classification status. Within the northern area of Quito is where the major businesses reside. The upper-class neighborhood are the major part of the northern area, in addition, the Quito international airport and many recreational areas are located in the northern area as well. Cuenca The city of Cuenca also known as Santa Ana de los Cuatro Rios de Cuenca is the third largest city within the country of Ecuador. Cuenca has an elevation of 8200 feet above sea level, and the city resides within the province of Azuay. What makes Cuenca such a unique city is that it is full of cobblestone streets, skyscraping towers, and marble whitewashed buildings. The city was claimed to be founded around 500 A.D., and originally a Canari settlement found the city. Currently the city of Cuenca has a population of 417, 632 and is also known to have the reputation of having the oldest university which is the University of Cuenca. Cuenca is also home of eight other universities as well in addition to the University of Cuenca. The climate that Cuenca experiences is the same as the rest of the country. Throughout the day the temperature is normally high and in the evenings are normally cool with cool breezes coming down off of the Andes Mountains. Cuenca is host to the wet-dry climate and the dry season which is the summer usually comes within the months of June through December. This season brings with it high temperatures and very very cool nights on a regular basis. As for the wet season being the winter season comes within the months of January lasting through May. During this period of time Cuenca experiences days with much rain as their precipitation with a mixture of different precipitations as well, although. the heaviest precipitation storms within the month of May. The city of Cuenca is also surrounded by mountains on all sides, and has four main rivers that all feed into the Amazon River. Manta, Ecuador Manta, Ecuador a lightly populated city hosting roughly 200,000 people, and the city of Manta is the fifth largest city in the country of Ecuador. Manta is a very small city compared to is fellow cities within the country, however, the city does have its own international airport named The Eloy Alfaro International Airport. The airport in Manta is also home to the military base that they have there. Since the year 1999, Manta, Ecuador has been one of military bases for the United States air forces. This military base also serves as a drug trafficking place that helps stop the importing of drugs from the Columbian drug trafficking. The military base also serves as a military look-out for U.S. military naval air craft leaving the middle east. On the other hand, Manta serves as a big tour site for foreigners and local individuals as well. When people visit they usually visit the beach first and bare witness to the large crashing waving hitting the beaches coast. Then moving into the inner city is a great place for shopping and getting involved in ceramics, arts & crafts, and other social things as well. Moreover, during the evening the city of Manta has plenty to offer as far as clubs and party scenes. In addition, Manta also serves as place to enjoy long walks along the beach with the calm cool breezes coming down from the Andes Mountains. THE FOUR TRADITIONS OF GEOGRAPHY SPATIAL TRADITION The spatial tradition of Ecuador is within the Latin America area, and its people that live there are what I would call evenly distributed. Because within the country of Ecuador the people are not grouped within just one area of one big city, in addition, the smaller the city gets the smaller the population becomes. As far as the transportation and movement of people, the everyday airplane and vehicle are the main transportations. As mentioned previously, some of the cities in the country of Ecuador have international airports and also have transportation through taxi cabs. The main highway that connects the northern and southern part of the country is what is called the Pan-American Highway. However, the majority of people live within the city of Guayaquil which is the largest city in the country of Ecuador. AREA STUDIES TRADITION The regional geography of Ecuador is in the Latin America, however, the description of the areas in the country are commonly the same, because they share the same interest. All of the cities that I mentioned are close to the Andes Mountains and all of the cities share the common climate which is the wet-dry climate. The cities summers are commonly high in temperature and the evenings are commonly cool due to the cool air coming off of the Andes Mountains. As far as international trends, as stated before the country of Ecuador used to have their own currency, but since the year 2000 Ecuador adopted the United States currency. HUMAN-ENVIRONMENTAL TRADITION The impact of the surrounding area on the cities in the country of Ecuador, they just all share the common climate and year-round temperatures. The perception of the environment is simply wet-dry climate, therefore the cities can either expect hot temperature during the summers and cool temperatures during the winters. In addition, the winter brings with it cold brisky air that runs down the Andes Mountains, and heavy precipitations of rain that occur when the winter season is almost over. The political aspect of the country is under the democracy leadership and with Rafael Correa under presidency, he upholds the democracy to the fullest. The common culture of Ecuador is authentic Spanish, every since the country gained its independence in October 9, 1820. The common food of Ecuador is chicken, beef, and pork. Usually when served food within the country it will most likely come with potatoes, rice, and a fruit beverage. EARTH-SCIENCE TRADITION The total size of Ecuador is 98,985 square miles, and is south of the equator with measurements of 9°S and 78.21°W. WEB-SITE HYPER LINK: http://ljones85.angelfire.com
