HexaGreat 3D, in its original Japanese format, Rokkaku Daioh, has been available to Mac users since 1994, but has received little acclaim outwith the East due to the lack of an English language version, and of a stable port to the Windows operating system. Used to covert 2D images, such as drawings and photos into 3D polygon models, HexaGreat 3D found a huge market in fans of Manga, who wished to portray their 2D idols in three dimensions. HexaGreat, compared to other 3D polygon modelers, has a limited toolset, but an easy learning curve, and due to its unique symmetrical modeling system, rewards the artist with an eye for perspective.

HexaGreat allows the modeler to import a background picture to use as a reference for creating a 3D model, as do all 3D modeling packages. The difference with HexaGreat 3D is that the background image used should not be a face-on plane, offering the traditional "T-form" that is used as a guide to modeling in software such as 3DS Max or Maya. Rather, the reference image should be tilted, as in HexaGreat 3D, all modelling is done in perspective. This is counter-intuitive to many modelers who come to HexaGreat from other modeling packages, as traditionally, modeling in 3D is done from the absolute front, side, top, bottom and back views, referring to the perspective view only to assess the progress of the 3D modeling process.

          

 

Symmetrical Modeling with HexaGreat

3D In HexaGreat, the modeler traces over the background image, and HexaGreat 3D generates the Free 3D model automatically by calculating the z-axis depths. Due to the automated nature of polygon creation, the user is restricted to making symmetrical models: if a point is created on the left side of the model, a mirror of that point must also be created on the right side. This symmetrical method of modeling lends itself to creating objects such as vehicles, robots, buildings and other man-made structures. While HexaGreat 3D is not designed specifically for organic modeling, its ease of use makes it an effective choice for the creation of basic low polygon character models for games, ready for importing into a 3D package with a more advanced toolset for additional modeling refinement, texturing and animation.
