Lake Shore Subdivision- 90 years of greatness!

Originally platted in the early 1920’s, on a small peninsular on the west bank of the Mighty St. John’s River, a small community was formed. During the years of, and following The Great Depression, this area remained mostly undeveloped, spare from a few dozen homes and businesses constructed. It wasn’t until the designation of Naval Air Station Jacksonville in 1940, that this area seen radical development. After the United States’ involvement in World War II, the area flourished with many new homes and businesses to better serve our Troops. When the war ended, many local men and women returned to Jacksonville and constructed homes in Lake Shore. This trend continued into the Korean War, at which the end of, most of the Lake Shore area had been developed, but some room was still available. The last of which, homes were constructed to complete a very tight-knit community, outside of Jacksonville City Limits (Pre-Consolidation).

Historical Arches- A symbol for a Community

In the early years of the Spanish – Mediterranean style of construction, 6 original arches were constructed along Appleton Avenue (Earliest photo Circa 1925), crossing Bayview Road and (former) St. Johns Avenue (Currently State Road 21, Blanding Blvd.,), that acted like a central gate way to the South West Side, outside of Jacksonville City Limits (Pre-Consolidation). After continuous expansion of Blanding Blvd., 3 of the original 6 arches were destroyed to make way for larger road ways. In a period extending from 2008-2010, a restoration was performed on the existing arches, in which the result of this restoration was a historical designation.  This Restoration was brought about by a special group of VOLUNTEERS.  These Volunteers raised funds, worked with the City of Jacksonville, with blood sweat and tears, to achieve their goal! Who are these Volunteers you ask? Well, they are………….

The LakeShore Area Preservation Society- LAPS

Established in 2002, with the mind set of creating a better neighborhood for our children of Lake Shore Middle High School(Established 1942) and Bayview Elementary(Established 1956), a select group of neighbors got together to form an organization. Throughout the years, LAPS has created a better since of Community to our local area with projects geared, not only towards the membership, but also the Community at large. We work tirelessly with our local Community, Business Owners, Home Owners, Renters, and Pedestrians, to better improve our small portion of Jacksonville Florida, to ensure the PERFECT setting, for the perfect way of life for our residents.

This website is in dedication to all the hard work of our Volunteers. We also dedicate this website to the men and women of the Armed Forces that live in our Community and abroad!
