Theme:

Words are powerful they can be used to cause harm or do good.

.

This is the theme because throughout the story Liesel uses words to do good by reading to people during the bombing raids to calm them and by reading for Frau Holtzapfel when she learned her son had died in the war.

.

Words can also cause harm as shown throughout the story Hitler uses his words to brain wash people into thinking that the jewish people are evil and that they were the cause to the bad things happening in Germany. 

                                                                              Liesel's dad is leaving for war and Liesel is

gave a jew bread when they were walking thru their

street thinking that nazi officials will check their house

Most important lines:

#1: "Is this yours?"

"Do you want to read it?"

"Yes Papa." A tired smile. Metallic eyes melting.

"Well, we'd better read it then"  

(Zusak 64).

#2: "In November 1940, when Max Vandenburg arrived in the kitchen of 33 Himmel Street, he was 24 years old" (185).

#3: "I have hated words and I have loved them, and I hope I have made them right" (528).

I chose the first line because it starts  Liesels love for books by reading her first one which sparks her book thievery throughout the story.

I chose the second line because Max Vandenburg was a jew that Liesel's family would end up hiding in their basement putting them in great danger.

.

I chose the last line because it shows that Liesel hates words just as much as she loves them and she hopes that she has used words the right way so people won't hate them but love them
