INFORMATION LETTER (FQ)

Race and Belonging in an international city: Overseas Chinese in ‘new’ Shanghai (UTS HREC REF NO.2007-010A)

WHO IS DOING THE RESEARCH?

My name is Julie Lim and I am a PhD student at UTS. My supervisor is Professor Stephanie Hemelryk Donald.

WHAT IS THIS RESEARCH ABOUT?

This research is to find out about the general perceptions of the city of Shanghai as an ‘international” metropolis through the experiences of people visiting and residing in the city, and the understandings and perceptions of hospitality in the service industry, which is a regularly occurring point of contact for local Chinese and foreigners. The research aims to determine how these human interactions demonstrate, reject or re-articulate hospitality as a feature of cosmopolitanism.

IF I SAY YES, WHAT WILL IT INVOLVE?

I will ask you to answer a questionnaire, which should take no more than 15 minutes of your time.

ARE THERE ANY RISKS?

There are very few if any risks because the research has been carefully designed. Your identity will remain anonymous in any reporting of the results obtained from the data you provide.

WHY HAVE I BEEN ASKED?

You are able to give me the information I need to find out about experiences as a foreign guest in Shanghai, particularly in the service industry, and learn about your perceptions on the city as an international metropolis.

DO I HAVE TO SAY YES?

You don’t have to say yes.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN IF I SAY NO?

Nothing. I will thank you for your time so far and won’t contact you about this research again.

IF I SAY YES, CAN I CHANGE MY MIND LATER?

You can change your mind at any time and you don’t have to say why. I will thank you for your time so far and won’t contact you about this research again.

WHAT IF I HAVE CONCERNS OR A COMPLAINT?

If you have concerns about the research that you think I or my supervisor or Dr. Sally Gong (local contact in Shanghai) can help you with, please feel free to contact us at Julie.Lim@uts.edu.au, Stephanie.Donald@uts.edu.au or sally_gong@staff.shu/edu/cn.

If you would like to talk to someone who is not connected with the research, you may contact the Research Ethics Officer on +61 2 9514 9615, and quote this number: 2007-010A.
