Cherating, one of the most famous east coast hot spots, also well-known as the venue of Asia’s first Club Med. A one-kilometre long road runs parallel to the beach and seafront chalets dotting the roadside. Cherating village houses a laidback and drooping selection of residents, and businesses here; the village remains unpleasantly bare and there are more cats, monkeys and monitor lizards than people, yet it’s the friendly group of locals that make Cherating so warmly appealing. Malay surfers hang around the shoreline, aging hipsters patronize the eateries and businesses along the line operate at a leisurely pace.

Cherating is known for its dining options, when you’re in the area, the charming Payung Café is one of the most well-known places to hang out. The rasta-style café serves up a good selection of food and though prices may be over-the-top at this family-run venture, the ambiance is decidedly hard to resist.
