Acne – more than a skin problem

As seen in our previous articles Acne is basically a dermatological term used to define the encompassing of clogged pores, lumps and pimples that may occur anywhere on the human body (face, chest, upper arms or back). The acne problem may be also a message that something inside the body isn't functioning how it should. That’s why acne is not the only problem you have to consider. The problem may lie also elsewhere inside the body which produces symptoms such as acne, blackheads and whiteheads.

That’s why a good kitchen is essential for a healthy skin. Eating the right kind of food is what can give you a strong immune system and help you prevent sickness and all kinds of skin blemishes including acne. Fruits and vegetables for example provide you with minerals and nutrients that build your blood, tissue, bones, and cells. It is minerals that build every part of your body. It is minerals that keep your body's pH at the required level.

Consider also exercising regularly for good circulation and elimination of the “toxins” in your body and the hormones that lead to more oil producing the skin. Also get plenty of good-quality rest and avoid as much as possible stress.

Acne and its causes

In the previous article we’ve seen some tips on how to handle acne to have a clean skin. But let’s see what acne is and what causes this disease. On the skin surface, there are glands that produce an oily substance called sebum which is used to moisturize the skin and hair. During adolescence these glands (sebaceous glands) enlarge and produce excess sebum. This excess sebum or oils blocked the follicles, known also as pores and bacteria will grow will causing the inflammation of the sebaceous glands. And it's a matter of time before you see their handiwork in the form of whiteheads, blackheads and pimples.

The exact causes of acne are debatable. Doctors believe it results from several related factors, some being out of your control, as environment. If in puberty acne appears because of some hormonal changes (androgens - male sex hormones- increase in both boys and girls causing the sebaceous glands to enlarge and make more sebum), it is possible that hormonal fluctuations can trigger the onset of adult acne too.

That is why many women suffering from adult acne notice a change in their acne around the time of their menstrual cycle. But we have to consider that unhealthy foods, coffee, sugar, stress even if not proven that are a cause of acne, are thought to aggravate acne breakouts.

How to prevent acne

Acne is an affection that occurs in most of the teenagers and should be properly treated so that the affected person could regain its confidence back and live normally. In order to avoid Acne from spreading or to prevent it from reappearing teenagers should follow some tips.

First of all those who have problems with Acne should be careful what face cleanser they use. It is best to avoid alcohol lotions or any soap based cleansers that might dry your skin too much. Most of the teenagers think that if they use a lotion that dries their skin the pimples will not appear any more. This is a solution only for the moment as the sebaceous glands in the skin will be stimulated by the dryness on the skin and will produce more and more sebum that will end up clogging pores again. Instead of using products that dry your skin try using gentle oil free and soap free cleansers. Most of all are found as face washing gels or creams.

In winter it is perfectly normal to use a cream for the face skin, but avoid using a fat cream, just use a cold cream. Nowadays the cosmetic industry has perfected itself and can offer care products for Acne skin. You can find there creams that will protect you skin against wind, rain and cold but it will also protect is against Acne.
