If you happen to spend most of your day in a jewelry making shop then you know the importance of having a number of torches. Micro torches make the work of creating simple yet elegantly designed and soldered jewelry a breeze. There is no better tool for this kind of job other than a reliable and certainly powerful torch. However using the torch for a novice can be very intimidating. Similarly a professional jeweler can also find using micro torches difficult if he is used to using traditional torches which feature a tank setup. The traditional torches work pretty well for those who are familiar with them. But you do not need to spend your time learning about an old system. How about learning the use of the newer more reliable micro torches?

A passion for jewelry work should allow you to learn how to use butane micro torches really fast. First get to appreciate the value of the butane micro torch in your shop. Understanding that the torch is of no use if it does not have fuel in it will give you a good starting point. Regular butane fuel can be purchased from the nearest hardware store. However there are several categories of the fuel that you will find in the store with regular fuel among them. If you can purchase “triple refined” fuel for your torch the better. This fuel will help to keep the head of the torch clean.

Anyway regular fuel also works well. Don’t worry about the fuel, keep your eyes on the torch. Refilling the torch is a task that requires some level of sobriety, total concentration to avoid any mistakes. As you do this task more often you will get to master the know-how. To fill the torch you need to be somewhere in the open, a place that is well ventilated. This means that, you should take the butane canister and the torch and go outside. If you own a torch with a stand that can be removed, go ahead and have it removed first, and place it somewhere safe. After which you can remove the cap from the torch.

Removal of the cap should be easy. This is to be followed by the actual filling of fuel into the torch. To achieve this turn the torch upside down to reveal the filling point that is located at the bottom. With the butane canister at hand and the torch in an upside down position insert the tip of the canister into the filling point and then press the canister down firmly to push the fuel into the torch.  If you sense an escape of fuel from the canister when refilling stop the process and then tighten the regulator knob. Fill the torch until you hear a spitting sound emerge from the filling point.

Then replace the cap back into position tightly followed by the stand and allow the butane filled into the torch to settle for a while. Get to learn more about the micro torch butane here.
