It happens to most people at least one breakdowns time in their life. They find themselves stranded on the side of the road due to an overheated vehicle, flat tire, or worse a car accident. You can’t stop these things from ever happening, but what you can do is try and be as prepared as possible in case it does happen. Here are a few things that may come in handy if you find yourself “in the middle of nowhere” needing roadside assistance (in no particular order).

A great thing to always have in your vehicle is a reliable flashlight with some extra batteries. It could be late at night and very dark when that flat tire happens, so best to have a reliable source of light. You also want to make sure you have orange triangle reflectors (and/or emergency flares) so vehicles have a chance to see you and not cause an accident. Other handy items are jumper cables, a first aid kit, extra blankets and yes, a spare tire. You could also benefit from having a stash of food such as protein bars or nuts, especially if you are travelling long distances with vast amounts of miles in-between cities or towns. Some other random items you may choose to store in your vehicle include maps, water bottles, a toolkit, paper towels and warm clothes (especially if you are travelling in the cold season). Travelling with kids? We could list a thousand things that would come in handy, but realistically speaking it would be good to have extra food, diapers, medications, and of course toys or books to keep them entertained in case you have to wait for a tow truck.

The most important thing to keep in mind if you are stranded on the side of the road is safety. If you feel that your life is in danger, it’s best to call 911 and seek help immediately.
