What are temperature controlled goods?

Temperature controlled (TC) goods (otherwise known as cold chain or Temperature Sensitive Products (TSP) are items that require a controlled temperature environment during its transportation e.g. frozen or chilled goods. The temperature-sensitive products usually have to be kept at a specific temperature to avoid multiplying bacteria, perishing or reducing the shelf life. These items may include dairy products, meat, fish and seafood, plants, medicines and fruit and vegetables.

Why is the temperature control important?

The products must be perfect/sellable condition, so it is vital for the temperature to remain as required throughout the entire journey. Freight forwarders may have to think about how they load products, as well as if there are multimodal forms of transport needed for a journey from the place of produce, to the market.

What is the common temperatures for goods to be transported?

The temperature goods have to be kept at is usually dependent on what the load contains. An example of a common temperature range is between 2°C and 8°C (36°F and 46°F) for pharmaceutical goods. Temperatures that are classed as ‘cold’, ‘chilled’ or ‘frozen’ are more typical types of TC goods as opposed to ‘warm’ or ‘hot’ conditions.

Pharmaceutical goods… what about them?

Pharmaceutical goods rely heavily on conditions being temperature controlled during its transit. Without this sustainable environment, products that have sensitive or active chemicals may lose their affect when being used. The good manufacturing process (GMP) set in place regulations that all pharmaceutical environment requires standardized conditions. Furthermore, it is set in place that all procedures that may impact the safety, efficiency or quality of the pharma products must be authorized, stored and distributed.

What is the CCQI? The Cool Chain Quality Indicator (CCQI) was established by the Cool Chain Association (CCA) and Germanischer Lloyd (GL). The CCQI is industry standards for cold chain logistics, where ranked qualities must be met when dealing with temperature controlled goods. CCQI is stated to have similar requirements as other quality management systems of the ISO 9000 type, and was invented with an aim to maximize the consistency and quality of goods transported via the cool chain.

What are perishable goods?

Perishables are items that are classified as perishable or sensitive, and are at risk of damage or decomposition if not packaged appropriately or kept in controlled conditions. These items may consist of fruit, veg, fish, meats, milk, cheese, medicines, flowers, materials (such as paper, silk, cotton). Perishables are slightly different from TCGs, as it may require specific environments for the produce to arrive safely to its destination. For example, paper, silk or cotton would have to be handled with care, and would have to be protected from any moisture or other damage that may affect its quality.

What types of transport are there for perishable goods?

Different types of transport services are available depending on what your perishable goods require. Sometimes goods require special care plus temperature controlled environments. Isothermal freight limits the amount of heat that can enter the cool environment with the goods kept inside. This is achieved very similar to a flask. The isolation of walls, doors, ceiling, and floor, which restricts the interchangeable temperatures between the interior and exterior of the van/truck. Refrigerated vehicles tend to have a non-mechanical cold source to lower the temperature of the interior overall temperature. These usually form a temperature of 30ºC to -20ºC. Freezer transport includes a cold production mechanism, which reduces and maintains the interior temperature between -12ºC and -20ºC to keep goods at freezing point or below.

How are perishable goods classified?

The movement of perishable cargo is controlled by the 'Agreement on the International Carriage of Perishable Foodstuffs an on the Special Equipment to be used for such Carriage (ATP Treaty)'.  This treaty enforces standards that guarantee qualifying conditions for transporting foods for consumption.
