New England Payroll Services

Under general direction, manages all aspects of the University payroll functions including tax compliance for Foreign Nationals; coordinates and prepares general ledger reconciliations of payroll funds; develops, monitors, and controls payroll operating standards and procedures; updates, maintains, and assists with developing procedural improvements to payroll system; manages staff in preparation of federal, state, and local tax deposits, and accumulating and reconciling information for government reporting; prepares quarterly and year-end payroll tax reports including federal form W-2 processing and oversees processing of form 1042; provides payroll information and correspondence for Internal Revenue Services (IRS) issues; researches and analyzes federal, state, and local tax withholding and reporting regulations. It offers only the ability to run payroll, and doesn't handle any of your payroll tax needs.  The enhanced package includes all of those features and also provides you the necessary payroll tax forms.  We like that the cost for those packages goes down even further if you are willing to pay for a year upfront.  The most in-depth package is Intuit Full Service Payroll, which runs your payroll, takes care of your payroll tax responsibilities, provides your year-end W-2 forms and has someone set up the system for you.

With this package, you also receive free direct deposit and new-hire reporting, which many of the other companies we analyzed charged extra for. The only added cost you may incur is for employees working in different states.  Some other services we spoke with quoted one price, but as we questioned about additional services, the price quickly escalated. It is also helpful that Intuit has all its pricing information directly on its website.

If you choose the full-service package, Intuit handles all of your free payroll companies tax responsibilities.  The service automatically calculates your payroll taxes, withholds the proper amount from each check, and files your payroll taxes with the state and federal government. What we liked about full-service package's tax services is that they're guaranteed.  Intuit guarantees that it will make all your payroll tax deposit filings accurately and on time based on the data you supply.  If the service makes an error, it will pay all the resulting payroll tax penalties that you incur.  With the enhanced package, Intuit calculates all your federal and state payroll taxes for you; it's just up to you to make the payments.

The service also automatically fills in the latest federal and most state payroll tax forms.  This payroll system is extremely user-friendly, especially if you're going with the full-service package.  With the full-service package, Intuit provides a payroll specialist to help you set up the system and walk you through your first payroll. For the full-service package, you have the option of entering employee information on your own, like you would for the other two packages, or having an Intuit payroll specialist do it for you.  Once your employees are entered into the system, running payroll consists of the same three-step process for all three packages.

During this stage, you also have the ability to compare your current payroll with the previous one to make sure everything lines up. While most services offer accounting software integration, sometimes for an added cost, Intuit's service actually works in tandem with QuickBooks by automatically syncing the two together.  Every time you submit a payroll to run, all of your payday info — including check amounts, state and federal taxes, and deductions — is sent to a server in the cloud.  With some of the other larger online payroll services we analyzed, we had to wait on hold for lengthy periods of time, which was not the case with Intuit.
