THE ANCIENT SHIT Too much time has been wasted in the endeavor of proving whether or not the events depicted in the Bible ever actually took place. Suffice it to say that most of them did not; it is unlikely that the man called Jesus the Nazarene ever lived, let alone fairy tales like the Great Flood or the Tower of Babel. Rather than belabor the same tired debates, however, I would prefer to examine the content of the book from another angle: literary analysis. Instead of demonstrating that the Bible is no historical chronicle of real events, I will scrutinize the narrative as a work of literature by analyzing the characters and their motivations within the story. I will treat the Bible as what it is: a novel written by more than sixty authors over a millennium. This series will constitute an ongoing project. Genesis |
