Be Aware Of Ectopic Pregnancy Symptoms
Ectopic pregnancy symptoms are often misunderstood for normal pregnancy symptoms. It is hence important to become aware of what an Ectopic pregnancy is and what symptoms it may exhibit. An Ectopic pregnancy occurs when the fertilized egg gets lodged in a location other than the uterus (womb), where a normal embryo gets implanted. This pregnancy most commonly occurs in the fallopian tube (also known as tubal pregnancy), which transports the egg to the womb. In some cases, the implantation may also take place in the pelvic sites like the ovary, abdomen, and the cervix.

Though in many cases, the causes are unknown, the most common factors that lead to the risk of Ectopic pregnancy symptoms are fallopian tube problems, which can be due to pelvic infections (sexually transmitted diseases, pelvic inflammatory disease), intrauterine contraceptive devices, and endometriosis. Smoking, abdominal surgeries involving the reproductive system and several hormonal drugs like fertility drugs, contraceptive hormonal medication have also been associated with Ectopic pregnancies.

How Does One Know If She Has Got An Ectopic?

Ectopic pregnancy symptoms are usually difficult to diagnose, as they resemble those of a normal pregnancy. She may have a missed period and symptoms such as nausea and breast tenderness. An abnormal vaginal bleeding may follow a delayed period. There is also pain on the side of the Ectopic and a feeling of light-headedness may persist.

A doctor should be consulted when a woman notices the above Ectopic pregnancy symptoms. Ectopic pregnancy requires treatment to avoid rupture of the fallopian tube, her further fertility, and perhaps life too.

Symptoms Only Worsen!

If no treatment is given, the pregnancy symptoms may worsen over several days or weeks. They include:

  • Severe pelvic pain
  • Shoulder pain
  • Faintness or dizziness caused by blood loss
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Low blood pressure
  • Lower back pain

    Diagnosing An Ectopic

The diagnoses based on the above Ectopic pregnancy symptoms are done using blood tests for HCG and vaginal ultrasound. If the HCG levels are positive, pregnancy is confirmed, but there is no information about the site of the pregnancy. Only a vaginal ultrasound can help the doctor locate the gestational sac. However, the sac cannot be seen clearly in cases of Ectopic. If the HCG levels are more than 2000mIU/ml, the doctor will be able to see the sac and in cases where he cannot, the diagnosis is an Ectopic pregnancy.

You need to call a doctor at the earliest if you suspect any of the above mentioned Ectopic pregnancy symptoms. Early detection can preserve the fallopian tube and enhance the chances for a normal pregnancy. You should augment your knowledge about Ectopic pregnancies by reading pregnancy books and ezines.

Ectopic pregnancy symptoms can mislead you to thinking that you have a normal pregnancy. Read pregnancy books on ectopic pregnancies to know better.
