Teenager and adults don't get enough sleep

How many hours do you think people sleep per night? The average that most people usually sleep cargoes from six to nine hours per night. However people do not get enough sleep. Therefore, they suffer from so much stress and pressure in their busy lives. The problems for students and people when they don’t get enough sleep are insomnia, sickness failures, education, and money problem.

Some teenagers and adults have the problem of insomnia. According to Emedicinehealth, “Most adults have experienced insomnia or sleeplessness at one time or another in their lives. An estimated 30%-50% of the general population are affected by insomnia, and 10% have chronic insomnia” (Emedicinehealth.com). This fact shows that almost half of the populations are affected by insomnia. People who are insomnia can't get enough sleep because they are stressed; have too much caffeine, and depression. Furthermore, emedicinehearth also states that “insomnia affects all age groups. Among adults, insomnia affects by women more often than men” (Emedicinehealth.com). Basically, there is more women affected insomnia than men. I believe this could be because most women have more work to do like household chores and take carry of their family so all of these might stresses drive them crazy. I think that when people are sleeping, they shouldn't be thinking of these problems. Therefore, they might get more stress and pressure, so they can't get enough sleep.

Another cause of insomnia is a bad diet. Throughout the day we eat and drink a lot of different foods that are bad for our health like drink too much coffee, which cause us to do be able to get to sleep at night? Sometimes, if we eat or drink caffeinated foods before bed time, they can also interfere with our sleep pattern at night. Caffeine deprives people from sleep and people get it by consuming many things as soda, chocolate, some over-the-counter pain medications, coffee, tea and other.

Education also makes people stress and makes it so they can't sleep. According to Teenshealth, “

Stress doesn't always happen in response to things that are immediate or that are over quickly.

Ongoing or long-term events, like coping with a divorce or moving to a new neighborhood or school, can cause stress, too.

Concerns about work, school, health or family can keep your mind active at night, making it difficult to sleep.

Stressful life events, such as the death or illness of a loved one, divorce, or a job loss, may lead”. (teenshealth.com)

I think that people who have a lot of friends, they can talk and listen to each other’s problems. In addition, when school is really hard, students have to spend more time on their work and studying for tests. It doesn’t give students enough time to sleep. After they go to bed it will be very late and sometimes they can’t fall asleep because they are just thinking about their test. If they get too much worry and pressure then they can't sleep, so when they go to school they don't do well on their tests or quiz. If this happens a lot, sometimes their grade would go down. Further, there are many students who want to continue their education in college or university, but they don't have enough money or financial to pay for their tuition. This will make them have to work and go to school at the same time. These students don't have enough time to study and sleep because they have to work. Sometimes, some of these students will fail their classes because they don't have much time to spend on their education.

Another cause is that ward stress people are getting sickness. They spend most of their time to work and stay on computer to do their homework, play game, and etc. But they don't spend their time to sleep. The National Sleep Foundation states that teens who are married when they still in high school seen to have more sickness because they have children to take care and they also go to school. In addition, “some teens go to work full-time to find the money to support their family.” (Sleepfoundation.org). After they go to school for 8 hours, they go to work for another 8 hours and then when they come home, they still have household chores to do. Many teens have so many things to do in their daily life, so they can't get enough sleep. My sister-in-law, Mrs. Xiong, also has the same Situation like the National Sleep Foundation has stated. She has three children and an eighth-year-old grandmother to take care of. She goes to work in the morning starts at 6am until 3pm. Then, she went to school for another 5 hours in the evening. When she comes home, there is so much stuff that she had to do, like cooking, changing diapers, cleaning her babies and grandmother, and etc. Every day, there are so many things to be done, she is very skinny and she can't get enough sleep. Moreover, she sometimes falls asleep while driving to work in the morning. I think that it is complicated for those people who have to work, go to school, and take care of their family.

The Economy is another problem that makes people not sleep. When the economy is bad, it makes people lose their job, businesses, and everything gets expensive. Some people don't have money to pay bills, buy food or clothes. For example, right now we are in a recession so some people can't get enough sleep because they are losing their jobs and have too many worries, such as don't have enough money to pay bills like rent, electricity, gas, water and etc. Lou Yang, a mother of eleven children who is unemployed, states

“I can't fall asleep until 1:00 am because I have so many things that are going on in my head.

I always think of how I can find money to support my eleven children and pay all the bills that keep coming up.

This recession makes me lost my job and can't do anything other than can't sleep. Since I lost my job and can't sleep, my blood pressure have started go up and I felt weaker and weaker.

Bad economic makes me have many worries and pressure.”

I agree with Mrs. Yang that losing jobs can cause people to not sleep, they keep thinking about their problems. The Bad economic makes situation people lose their jobs and properties.

Some researchers say that alcohol can destroy their health then lead to sleeping problems. Sleep problems may predispose some people to developing alcohol problems. According to Healthpublications, “During both drinking periods and withdrawal, alcoholics commonly experience problems falling asleep and decreased total sleep time. Other measures of sleep are also disturbed. “In further explains that, even alcoholics who have been abstinent for short periods of time (several weeks) or extended periods of time (several years) may experience persistent sleep abnormalities (healthpublications.com). In other words, people who drink a lot of alcohol also have problems of sleeping at night. Researchers also found that “alcoholics are more likely to suffer from certain sleep disorders, such as sleep apnea. Conversely, sleep problems may predispose some people to developing alcohol problems. Furthermore, sleep problems may increase the risk of relapse among abstinent alcoholics. (healthpublication.com). For example, in the general population, insomnia in the previous 6 months affected 18 percent of alcoholic people, but only 10 percent of nonalcoholic people (Brower et al. 2000). Among patients admitted for alcoholism treatment, rates of insomnia are even higher, ranging from 36 percent to 72 percent, depending on sample characteristics, the instrument used to measure sleep, the amount of time elapsed since the last drink, and the presence of other disorders. As we can see the information above, alcohol can't destroy people's health and they can fall asleep.

There are some solutions how people can sleep at night. People should go to early bedtime and stick with it. From the time you need to wake up to ensure you get the nine hours needed. On weekends, don't go to bed more than one hour later or wake up more than two or three hours later than you do during the week. Turn off TVs, cell phones, iPods and video games at least one hour before bed. However, you needed turn off everything it make you fall sleep easy and nothing bother you, it will make you don't wake up on midnight. It will make you also fall asleep from the bedroom and I also believe that if your room is cool, it will make you had a good sleep. According to John Kim, a sixty-year-old man, “I recommend that these solutions are very helpful and work, if you try like me, you will sleep as I did.” His experience shows that these solutions are work. (sleepingsolution.com). I think that people should try, so they can sleep at night.

Sleeping early will help people don't get disease, ready to learn, and have the passion to find jobs. According to a website, it states that “Sleep, especially when you wake up from a great night's sleep. In the past, sleep was often ignored by doctors and surrounded by myths, but now we are beginning to understand the importance of sleep to overall health and well-being. In fact, when people get less than 6 or 7 hours of sleep each night, their risk for developing diseases begins to increase. “(about.com). For example, when people get enough sleep, it helps them brain to get ready for school or work. Furthermore, they will have energy and passion to do well on that day. This solution shows me that most people need about 8½ or more than 9 hours of sleep each night. The right amount of sleep is essential for anyone who wants to do well on a test or play sports without tripping over their feet.

For my senior project, I will write some posters to put on the wall about how sleep early can help our brain ready to learn when we come to school so we will not fall sleep in the class because I see some student they fall sleep in the class when the teacher still teach it make the student didn't get many new thing or learn. First, I plan to ask my friends to help me write poster. Then put those posters on the wall. This will help students to understand why sleeping early is important. I believe that when they see these posters, they will tell or teach to their family members about this.
