Meaningful Topics I Learned in CISB11
One of the first assignments that we did in this class was create a Google account and set up a Google home page. This was very interesting for me because I did not know that you could have a Google account, and that it would bring a lot of cool information to you every time you opened your internet explorer. There are little add on programs that you can put on your Google home page and customize it to the what you consider useful and entertaining to you. Unlike other search engine home pages, where they decide what to put up for news and entertainment, with Google you get to choose what you see. This is important to me because I enjoy seeing news that is important, instead of celebrity gossip. I also get to see quotes from the most incredible people from the past and now every time I go to Google. When I start my career, this Google home page will help me for when I need to check my email quickly. As soon as I open an internet browser, there is a Gmail window showing me if I have any new emails.
I have never used Microsoft Excel before this class. I thought it was only something that you use to make lists and could be of use for nothing more. But from the few times we have worked with it in this class I have discovered that I was very wrong. Excel is extremely important for the workplace and at home, and can be of use to a large variety of tasks. It can assist with numerous math equations and can also graph information very efficiently. This could help me in the future with my taxes. I can also use it to track all my spending, and learn from that where I could save money. This probably won’t help me in my job, but it will be very good aid for me when I own my own home and have larger financial responsibilities.
I learned where to go to get free web space on the internet. And also I got an introduction on how to create a simple web page. In this day, we are heavily dependent on the internet and it is a great way to reach an audience or sell a product. Who knows what exactly we will all be doing in the future, this is a great tool to have. I don’t see how this could help me in my future career, but it may well turn out to be something I do in my free time. I’ve always wanted to open my own business; this could help me achieve that by reaching investors or customers.
Another interesting thing that I’ve been given an introduction to is how to program with java. If I ever decide that I would like to create a website, then I have a platform to start from to do my own java animations. My career doesn’t need any programming or anything like that, but this may help me in my day to day life.
