Other avid retailers have detected similar outlets for their products on Amazon. J.Crew sells clothes on the webpage and Sears has recently started selling its die hard tires.

"This really is a tremendous growth opportunity," R.J. Cilley, a senior vice president of digital at Lord Taylor said in a conference call on Tuesday. "We are now growing our footprint to reach exponentially more clients ."

For wal mart, the venture could be the latest attempt to reach a more urbane shopper. As part of that attempt, Walmart has made a string of acquisitions within the past 12 months, purchasing the clothing sites Bonobos and Modcloth and starting its own bedding and mattress line, sold exclusively online.

Walmart has also recently redesigned its site, giving it a sleek and modern appearance. Navy blues and grays have substituted the bright blue and yellow sunshine logos which decorate the company's hulking stores.

It's tricky to get the word Walmart anywhere on your website -- an omission that seems anything but accidental, while the giant merchant seeks to rebrand itself to the modern age.

The Lord Taylor web store on Walmart.com is anticipated to open in the forthcoming weeks. Lord Taylor is going to be responsible for shipping the clothing to customer's homes. It'll continue to market the exact brands in its stores and on its website at exactly the same prices as it's on Walmart.com.

The two companies declined to disclose financial details of their venture, like how the revenue would be shared for each slice of Lord Taylor clothing sold on Walmart.com.

For years, wal mart assembled a retail empire since the store that provides the lowest prices on staples such as toothpaste, milk and cat rotate-a mattress litter.

But now, the business has bigger ambitions -- for example making its website a"destination for fashion," said Denise Incandela, head of fashion for wal mart's e-commerce operations from the United States.

Like many retailers, Walmart wants to maximize its earnings beyond its own brick-and-mortar stores and find methods to slow Amazon's steady march toward world wide e-commerce domination. The other day, Walmart announced it was spending $16 million to purchase a controlling stake in Flipkart, the leading eCommerce provider in India.

Lord Taylor, which can be an element of the Hudson's Bay Company, which also owns Saks Fifth Avenue, has already been making big moves to live. It just hired a new president, Vanessa LeFebvre, an executive out of the internet clothing subscription Stitch Fix, to announce its strategy for an electronic digital age.

Late last season, Hudson's Bay sold the historic flagship Lord Taylor store on Fifth Avenue from Manhattan into the office-sharing company WeWork. Lord Taylor will still operate a store at some of the building, but much of the space will be useful for offices catering to both millennials along with startups and a headquarters to its fast-growing WeWork.

On Tuesday, Lord Taylor executives known for their site on the Walmart web site as a brand new type of"flagship" store.
