Contemporary art and your home

What do you think about the idea of buying modern pieces of art? There are certainly numerous paintings and sculptures to choose from, although it's fair to say that they may not all match your own ideas of beauty and elegance. In some senses, it's worth considering the fact that each item is usually bought with a purpose in mind.

There will be different decisions to take, depending upon the use of an individual piece. Is it, for example, to be placed in your own home? You may view it as being an investment for the future? There's also a chance that you want to buy a treasured gift for someone else.

What is the impact of these differing uses? To begin with, we might note that we all tend to make different decisions, depending upon the audience and who it is for. If you're buying for yourself, then you might like to think that you would buy something that appeals to your own, personal tastes. Is there a danger, however, that you could be

associated with others?

It seems to me that there is a very real danger here. Although we may believe that we can get the best artworks for our own home, we may also be thinking about how other people will react. Have we made tasteful choices? Will others look upon us differently as a result of the decisions that we have taken?

There can be no doubt that such things will have an impact. But what happens when you are specifically buying for someone else? This is surely a time to put your own thoughts to one side and to consider whether you are buying something that will truly be enjoyed by others.

So what sort of course of action should you be looking to take? I think that art is very personal, by its nature, which can sometimes make things a little more difficult. It certainly seems to be wise to concentrate on taking your time. There's unlikely to be the need to hurry in order to reach a decision here. There are numerous options, when it comes to oil painting and other associated pieces of art, so time is not necessarily of the essence.
