Madeleine McCann was abducted from her holiday apartment where she slept with her little brother and sister while her parents dined nearby. She was vacationing with her family and some of her parent's friends at the Mark Warner's Ocean Club Resort in Praia Da Luz, Portugal. Kate and Gerry McCann would play with their children during the day, taking them around to the pool, tennis courts, kid's club, and several other attractions before feeding them and tucking them into bed in the evening before going to dine 50 yards away with the rest of the group at a tapas bar. They would return to check on the kids every 30 minutes to make sure they were still sleeping and did not need anything. No one ever thought that anything more than the children waking up could happen in the family friendly resort. They were wrong. On the 3rd of May, 2007, Kate and Gerry were putting Madeleine and the twins to bed before going out to their nightly gathering. Madeleine turned to her mother and said, "Mummy, I've had the best day ever! I'm having lots and lots of fun". These were the last precious moments the McCanns had with their eldest daughter. When Kate came back from checking on the kids at 10PM, she was screaming Madeleine's name. The shutters and windows in the room had been opened, and the little girl was gone. The sheets had been left as they were when Kate tucked her into bed that night, not at all the mess she might have made getting up on her own. Within an hour, half of the hotel staff and holidaymakers were searching the resort for the missing 3 year old. The Portuguese police had arrived, but did not seem to be taking the abduction very seriously. They failed to recognise a photocopied picture of the child. They also failed to seal off the crime scene, and any evidence was contaminated by visitors at the resort who were looking for the girl. The investigation in the disappearance of Madeleine McCann had many faults from the beginning, and Madeleine remains missing. Although she should never have been taken, the media attention surrounding her disappearance has brought forth more good than anyone ever could have imagined. The McCanns continue to search tirelessly for their daughter, heading a massive global campaign to find her despite being named suspects in her disappearance (a status hastily applied in light of a new law that would be passed in Portugal in 8 days that would require more evidence to be presented against potential suspects). Since Madeleine was abducted, missing children have received more attention from the media, as opposed to being generally ignored as they used to be. The world now recognises the issue of child abduction more than before. The DontYouForgetAboutMe YouTube channel has also been created, as well as the Code Madeleine Six Point Action Plan for when a child goes missing. Madeleine has brought so much good into this world, and she deserves to be repaid for that. She deserves to come home to her family, who had to live through her 4th birthday without her, as well as Christmas and new year. Please help us bring Madeleine home! |
