IT Matters...

And It is the Implementation that Counts

Hello!

In the article “IT doesn’t matter” Nicholas Carr says Information Technology is becoming cheaper and more accessible which is diminishing “its ability to set one company apart from other companies”.  This may be true of the raw technology itself and companies that rely on spending high dollar amounts on the newest equipment to get a competitive edge quickly may be wasting their money.  However if these companies took the time to realize that we are moving out of the Information Age and in to the Creativity Age they may be able to see that it is not the technology itself that sets a company apart from competitors, but that the interrelationship among technology, creativity and innovation is what confers the true advantage.

Carr readily admits good use of IT does confer an advantage - but again, isn't this true with any process, input or tool? It is management and the innovative use of the input rather than the input itself that confers some advantage.  A fleet of the most reliable trucks and airplanes are worthless if the scheduler cannot do his job.  Companies that make good use of strategic frameworks and that correctly identify opportunities to wisely implement technology before their competitors are able to gain a competitive advantage and with the right project barriers, complementary resources and continues innovation can often time sustain that advantage for a long period of time.  Companies such as Woot! and Domino’s Pizza are excellent examples of the use of innovation and information technology to gain and sustain a competitive advantage.
