Do’s and Don’ts of Filing a Water Damage Claim

Water damage is the leading type of home insurance claims in Canada, if you find yourself having to submit an insurance claim for water damage rest assured, you are not alone. Submitting a claim and navigating the bureaucracy can seem overwhelming. The Phoenix team has compiled a list of do’s and don’ts to help you submit your water damage repair claim.

DO’s

Take all necessary steps to stop water flow. Yes, this may seem like the first logical step, but people often do not realize that insurance companies may deem negligence on your part – such as just letting your toilet overflow for a couple days. If it is possible to stop further damage in your home (such as calling a plumber), make sure this is taken care of first. Keep all receipts and reports you may get.

Start any necessary clean up right away. Not only does this reduce the chance of mold, which is NOT covered under most home insurance, it shows your insurance company you have taken initiative to mitigate the loss.

Make sure you understand yourpolicy and what it covers before you call the insurance company, using the wrong wording such as “flood” can actually get your claim denied.

Have your Policy Number ready and be prepared to answer detailed questions about your situation. Anticipate explaining where the damage came from, how it happened, when you first discovered it, and any other claim related questions that may arise.

Document, Document, Document. Take photos of the damaged areas and any possessions that may have been affected. Keep logs of the time, date, and full name of anyone you speak with from your insurance company.

Keep all Receipts. You will likely end up hiring a restoration company to clean up and repair the initial water damage. Keeping a folder with all documents you receive will help you stay organized and keep any requested documents readily available.

Keep Samples. If you decide to get the repairs done right away, make sure you keep a sample of any material that is getting replaced.  Insurance adjustors will most likely request samples.

Make yourself available. Field adjustors, restoration companies, and repair companies will all need access to your home. Have a plan in place if you are unable to take the time off work.

DON’TS

Do not assume. Make sure you are clear on what your policy covers – and your deductible amount. Sometimes it is a better option to pay out of pocket. Remember every claim filed will go on your home insurance record.

Do not use the word “flood” in lieu of water damage. Be careful what words you use to describe your situation. This can save you from your claim being denied.

Do not wait for the problem to get worse. Not making immediate reasonable repairs to prevent further damage to the home can potentially get your claim denied due to negligence.
