Meaningful Topics I Learned in CISB 11

Computer Information Systems class has increased my knowledge on today’s technology. I have a better understanding on how computers function internally and how it works with other hardware and software components.

One topic that is personally meaningful to me now is the chapter where I learned about the system unit. In this chapter, I became familiar with how computers represent data and programs. There are many components that make up a system unit including the central processing unit (CPU) and memory. I learned where they are placed and their unique functions. Now, I understand how a CPU works and various ways to increase the speed of my computer and make future computers faster. In order to improve the speed of my computer, I can add more memory, maintain the performance of the system, purchase a larger hard drive, and upgrade my internet connection and video graphics card. To create faster computers for the future, we need to figure out ways to create smaller components, faster bus speeds, and new backing materials and flexible circuits. Discovering ways to allow many instructions to be processed at once will also produce faster computers. This is meaningful to me because I can recognize how a computer functions and understand that there is a need to enhance its performance. Since my future career will involve the use of computers, I am well aware of what allows a computer to operate properly.

Operating systems is another topic that is important because I am able to distinguish the operating systems from one another. There are several types of operating systems: Windows, Mac OS, Linux, UNIX, NetWare, and Solaris. Different computers use different operating systems. Handheld PCs and mobile devices also have operating systems designed especially for them. Some of them include Windows Embedded, Windows Mobile, Palm OS, Embedded Linux, and etc. This is important to me because choosing the right operating system is important when buying a computer. Its impact to my future job is the increase in my awareness of the various types of operating systems. Different industries use different OS. I have to be familiar with the operating system that I think will be used in the field/ industry which I am interested in.

The third topic that I personally find meaningful is about computer networks and communications applications. After learning about computer networks, I know the several types of networks, their uses, how data travels over a network, and the types of network used depending on location. Some communications applications are mobile phones, global positioning systems (GPS), radio frequency identification (RFID), videoconferencing, and telemedicine. This is meaningful to me because I am now familiar with how people communicate with others using various methods. Doctors can perform surgery through the internet and people can have a conference using life-size video images. The impact this will have on my future career is that it will be easier to communicate with others in the future and I can think of ways on how to improve this process.

Internet Security is the final topic that is meaningful to me because the people can easily acquire another’s personal information through the internet. When using the internet, users have to be careful with online fraud, theft, viruses, and hackers trying to access their computer. This is meaningful to me because I should be cautious when using the internet. Setting up firewalls, encryptions, and virtual private networks can stop others from accessing the computer and stealing important information. The impact this will have on my future career is that I will try to figure out ways to prevent the security fraud and be more careful with sharing information through the internet.
