Why clomid does increase the chances of having twins?

Before getting to the statistical overview of clomid and twins, a deeper vision is required to know how the drug works.  Clomid blocks the estrogen receptors at the hypothalamus, which is the hormonal control center.  When the receptors are blocked, the hypothalamus releases FSH and LH, which are the naturally occurring stimulants for ovulation.

Clomid which is a make-up of estrogen is attached to the receptor cells and do not allow the naturally produced estrogen to attach to the receptor cells. When the body understands that the follicles in the ovaries do not produce enough estrogen, extra hormones are released to nurture the follicles to mature and produce more estrogen. When more estrogen is released from the follicles, the body has the capability to nurture and can mature more than one egg.  When two eggs are fertilized, twins will result.

Clomid and Twin Statistics

The drug increases the chance of having twins by 10 % and less than 1% of triplets or higher order.  During a trial, 7 % were of twins, 0.5 % was triplet and 0.3 % was quadruplet.  Twins resulted with the help of clomid, will not be identical. Statistics reveal that 1 in 5 was identical and the rest being fraternal.  There are also women who buy clomid online not just because they could not get pregnant but to have twins.  Women less than 25 years of age have increased rate of resulting in twins.  Fertility drugs alone do not catalyst multiple pregnancies, there are also other reasons namely diet, age, family history, height and weight.
