The atmosphere is made out of many gases including NO3 and N2O5 which can be detected by Cavity Ring Down Spectroscopy.  If the concentration of these gases are too high, they can damage the ozone.  If the ozone is damaged dangerous light will be allowed to penetrate through the atmosphere causing potentially serious damage to humans, plants, animals, and many other non living things.
