Keeping Your Scuba Gear Corrosion Free

Proper maintenance of your scuba gear is important if you want to make every dive worth your time and effort. Regularly cleaning your equipment will not only assure you of its safety and efficiency, it will also help prolong the life of the scuba gear.

One of the best ways to care for your scuba diving gear is to make sure that it is thoroughly cleaned after every dive. This is important because your gear will accumulate salt water, which can result to corrosion if not immediately attended to.

Cleaning your diving equipment does not entail a lot of hard work. The process is quite simple and you won’t need a lot of materials to remove corrosion. Here’s a guide that will be easy for you to follow:

•    The first thing you need to do is gather all the things you will need for the cleaning task. Prepare a clean bucket, half a cup of plain vinegar, and a gallon of hot water. Make sure the water is just the right kind of hot; not boiling.

•    Next, pour the hot water and vinegar into the bucket. Mix them well.

•    Get your scuba gear and slowly submerge it into the water. To prevent water from getting inside the regulator, be sure to put on the valve cap before you soak the gear into the mixture.

•    To ensure that your gear is properly cleaned and corrosion is removed, soak it in the mixture for four hours or even overnight. If you soak it overnight, place the bucket in a safe area to avoid accidents (like the bucket being bumped and the mixture and your gear thrown out).

•    After soaking, slowly remove your scuba gear from the bucket and rinse it with clean, cool water. If there are areas with some corrosion left, use a soft brush to remove them gently. Since you’ve already soaked your gear, it will be easy to remove any salt water residue.

•    Use a clean and soft cloth to dry your scuba gear. Make sure that it is completely dry before you put it back into your gear bag or storage.

Do these steps after every dive and your scuba gear will serve you well for a long time.
