Travel Socks That Enhance Blood Circulation

A long journey by air can be more than mentally draining, it can also have a very real impact on health. This is because a lack of movement combined with the less oxygen that is available in a pressurised cabin may result in the condition referred to as deep vein thrombosis, or DVT. If you want to reduce the risk of this problem developing you should look into investing in a pair of travel socks.

Travel socks are also known as compression socks. They have been designed to stimulate and promote the circulation of blood to the lower limbs and feet. A gradual compression reduces the risk of blood clotting which in turn would normally produce swelling and an onset of DVT.

Most travel socks available today are made from an elasticised fabric such as nylon or lycra. Though originally designed by medical companies more than half a century ago, today they have found in new purpose due to the increasing number of people opting to undertake long distance air travel.

It is essential to choose a pair that is the right size for the individual who is to wear them. This is best judged by a persons shoe size. Factors such as the style and feel are less important than the actual medical impact of the design. It would be useful to actually try out a few pairs to make sure they fit perfectly as otherwise the purpose would be defeated.

Prior to going on along journey it would be wise to wear the socks a few times to ensure they have the correct benefit. A physician would suggest that the best designs would have a medical rating of between 14 and 20 mm Hg. If you have a family history of varicose veins or DVT it would be useful to consult your GP about wearing compression socks prior to embarking on the journey.
