Chalk Renders New Fad In Local Cafe
When local artist Benjamin Peters was passing through the local mall in Durham, North Carolina, he stopped in a new coffee bistro that was in need of an overhaul to its menu boards. " At first I was just with a friend trying anywhere to get a cup of 'Joe'. says the artist. " I saw another artist working on the boards with a kind of chalk- ink, and I thought to myself, 'hey! I can do that!" Not wanting to step on the toes of the other artist, he came back to see the final results six weeks later. He noticed the work had been at a standstill, seemingly not even having progressed from the last time he saw the menu-boards. That's when he decided to talk to the owner, Lance Miller, of the Cafe Allegro, about employing his services. Peters immediately took out a set of chalk pastels and went to work on a small patch of the board. Miller was impressed. " I knew I had my artist", replies Miller. " His price couldn't be matched. Other professionals I had been looking at were charging five times what Ben was offering in price." His speed and attention to detail was a sure thing. Relying on a tight budget for his new store, Miller jumped at this opportunity.
