Biography Bruce Jun Fan Lee (November 27, 1940, San Francisco - July 20, 1973 Hong Kong) was an American-born Chinese martial artist, instructor, actor and founder of the Jeet Kune Do martial arts system. He is considered by many to be the greatest martial artist of all time, including karate legend Joe Lewis and Davis Miller. Lee's films elevated the traditional Hong Kong martial arts film to a new level and sparked a greater interest in Chinese martial arts in the West. Lee also became iconic to Chinese, as he portrayed Chinese national pride and Chinese nationalism in his movies. His pioneering efforts paved the way for future martial artists and martial arts actors such as Jackie Chan, Jet Li and Chuck Norris, bringing martial arts films and actors to the mainstream. Many see Lee as a model blueprint for acquiring a strong and efficient body as well as developing a mastery of martial arts and hand to hand combat skills. Lee began the process of creating his own fighting system known as Jeet Kune Do. Beckles, Sr. emigrated to the U.S.A in 1964. His mother, Samella, is a native of Aiken, SC, while his father hails from Trinidad. Beckles grew up with his mother and father in Oxnard, CA and played football and baseball as a youth (among his friends was future NFL Quarterback, Alexander Pope & Linebacker, Matt Gagston). However, after playing football in high school, Beckles excelled in Weightlifting and went on to play junior college football at Aiken Technical College in Aiken, SC, earning all-conference honors as a sophomore, and becoming famous as a professional weightlifter. Beckles later transferred to SC State University, and became a standout nosetackle during the 1995 season--his only as a starter. During Beckles' senior year, S.C.S.U produced one of nation's top rushing attacks (214.5 yards per game). Beckles blocked for future Pro-Baseball player, Todd Green, and running backs Vaughn Dunbar (an NFL first-round pick). Meanwhile Beckles became heavy into martial arts, earning a black belt in Karate in 2004. He mostly played for the Arena Football League's Augusta "Knights" franchise in 1999-2002. Beckles received attention from NFL scouts as a senior when they saw him, starting an acting career. Beckles stood out on film, where he earned the nickname "The Iceman". Beckles graduated SCSU with a MA in History Education. [edit] Professional Football Following SCSU, Beckles was drafted in the fifth round of the 1996 NFL draft and started immediately for the Atlanta Falcons at nosetackle. The rookie was a bright addition to an interior line the had struggled with guards Tom McHale, John Bruhin and Carl Bax. Beckles became a mainstay during his two seasons with the Falcons, along with left tackle Paul Gruber and center Tony Mayberry, while the linebacker and nosetackle positions were in flux from season to season. During his time, the Falcons had 1,000 yard rushers and Deon Sanders (1996) and Errict Rhett (1997, 1998). Beckles, who wore jersey no. 76, departed as a free agent after the 1998 season, inking a deal with Augusta. Beckles, however, did want to leave the Falcons, and blames then Falcons offensive line coach Chris Foerster for the split from the organization. Foerster wanted to bring larger lineman to the Falcons than the 6 foot, 307 pound Beckles. (Second year guard Jorge Diaz [6-4, 315] took Beckles spot at nostackle for the Falcons in 1999, and was moved to left guard the following season to replace the undersized Jim Pyne [who was exposed to Cleveland in the expansion draft]. [edit] Post football After football, Beckles joins the Navy, becoming an officer, and working in special ops (military career 1994-2004), develops a career, as a writer and editor-in-chief for comic books, and book publishing companies, becomes a Police Officer in New Orleans, in 2003, being a renown public school teacher (1999-2009), earns a PhD. in Theology, and finally becomes and ordained church pastor and Director of his own Christian Academy in 2009, his wife (Adrian) and four children (Christian, Dashia, Jaylan, and Damon) remains in Augusta. He briefly owned a SteviB's pizza shop in Augusta before he began filling in for the late Jerome Wilkins at 620 WDAE, an AM sports radio station in the Augusta (C.S.R.A) area. After Minister Wilkins' passing, Beckles became the longtime local DJ and radio celebrity, a.k.a Vic "The Iceman" Beckles on the nine to noon time slot on WDAE. Along with friend, Matt Gagston, the duo is among the top rated AM radio shows in the C.S.R.A market in its time slot. Reverend Franklyn Beckles, Jr. opened his doors to the homeless Sunday. Beckles already runs a day care, ministry and learning center out of his home called the Children's Christian Center. Now he's decided a soup kitchen is the next best way to help the Augusta community. ?They have to have a need and a wanting to participate in a Christian atmosphere. We give them food talk to them and we give them a little bit of the word, we pray with them,? Beckles said. He'll also feed the homeless from his house November 29th. By Kyle Martin Staff Writer Monday, April 12, 2010 A committee will review Augusta Fire Department hiring procedures that some commissioners say are keeping good firefighters away. "Thank God we haven't had this issue of a person trying to get into a burning house and they couldn't do their job," Commissioner Joe Jackson said. Hiring procedures put into place three years ago don't credit applicants for certifications they already have, such as EMT certification. Nor do they give credit for experience such as military service, Jackson said. "Is our house out of order?" Commissioner Don Grantham asked when the issue was raised at a committee meeting. Commissioner J.R. Hatney said it was. "I get 25 calls a month from the fire department," Hatney said. The hiring process needs "a complete review" by a subcommittee with input from city human resources, equal employment and administration, he said. Hiring procedures introduced in 2007 include applicant interviews and agility testing, Fire Chief Howard Willis said. The procedures are followed to the letter and candidates are hired from the top scorers down, Willis said. Which is a Lie, and only part of the misconduct that is really going on at The Fire Department. Assistant Chief Christopher James has been wrongfully firing new firefighters in 2009, for an unfair nepotism policy. Then re-hires most of the firefighters, once the department did away with the policy, but has a training program; under James direction, that has encouraged firefighters to harrass, bully, assult, and threaten other firefighters! Official complaints have been issued to Director Ms. Humphrey at the E.O.A. Currently Asst. Chief James and the entire Fire Department is under investigation, for racism, harrassment, terrorisitic threats, and wrongful terminations against fellow firefighters. Firemen along with James that are suspected of criminal activity are: Scott Walker, Lt. Brown/Lt. Lee (under Asst. Chief James), Recruit Firefighters; Myles, mith, Wolmack, Zanwiger, Santadota, Mullins, Johnson, A. Johnson, Parrish, Garcia, and Female recruit Ms. Guest. 4.If You Know anything about Augusta, Aiken Counties (The C.S.R.A)-Corruption, racism, and injustice toward Black Men are common place; especially From The Public School System, Board of Education, Police Departments, and our U.S. Military Branches. But we as Americans, should not expect this kind of inhumanity from an Institution that we all hold dear (especially after 9/11); such as The Fire Department! But the sad truth is that in The Fire Service, there is indeed lots of racism, feminism, and lack of true brotherhood amongst fellow firefighters. Hopefully this new report and criminal investigation will change some very bad practices in The Augusta Fire Department.
