Nightmare neighbor------Lester Elkins~121 Meadowlark Drive~Weedsport NY 13166

Lester Elkins, 64, stole his neighbor's vehicle, a 1997 Pontiac Bonneville. How did he accomplish this? His neighbor, a middle-aged, reserved woman was taken in by the suave, coy Lester who noticed the 'For Sale' signs on the car one morning in August 09. He approached her and inquired about the car.

Ms.S told Lester the car was advertised on craigslist for $1900 and the advertisement described the car, it's work history and also several photos. Lester said he wanted the vehicle and asked her how much was the least she would take. She said he could have it for $1500, adding she had just had work done and he could have all the papers.

Con man Elkins then asked her if she would accept payments with $400 down, playing on her kindness and good will with stories of his ill wife. Ms.S accepted his offer and Lester took the vehicle down the street to his own driveway.

Now Lester, the smooth talking con man of Shadybrook Estates, had the car in his possession for two and a half weeks before registering and insuring it. He then drove it all over Auburn and three weeks after taking possession instead of visiting Ms. S with a payment--as agreed--he knocked on her door and informed her the car was not worth even $100 and said he would not give her another penny.

Ms. S was devastated. Disabled and living on a tiny, fixed income she could hardly afford to be misled out of $1100 by a devious con man. She had purchased the Bonneville for $4000 and put over $4000 into upkeep and repairs. The car was beautiful and in mint condition when Lester took it. In fact, Scott Black in Weedsport had just tuned the car up only weeks before the theft and Ms. S had paid him $250 for that service.

Following the theft both Elkins and his "very ill" wife regularly harrassed Ms. S whenever she passed their trailer while walking her dog. They demanded she return their $400 and intimidated her until she threatened to call the police.

To date, 1/22/20010, the Elkins have not paid another cent to Ms. S for her Bonneville. The lesson here?...Never trust a neighbor.......
