James Hetfield was born on August 3rd, 1963 in Los Angeles, California. His father was a truck driver, mother, a light opera singer. Hetfield's family's Christian Science beliefs played a big part in his childhood growing up. At the age of nine, James started becoming interested and very involved in music. He was beginning to take piano lessons, followed by picking up his brother's drums before ever taking up the guitar during his pre-teen years.

James Hetfield is the frontman of Metallica, serving as the band's lead vocalist & rhythm guitarist since the band was formed. Hetfield is married to Francesca Tomasi and has 3 children: Cali [10], Castor [8], & Marcella [7].
