Wonderful Holidays In The Canary Islands

The Canary Islands, Spain’s territory, are fondly referred to as the happy islands. This may be because of the fun times that are experienced in the region. The canaries experience the best weather conditions all year through making all the time of the year perfect for holidays. The temperatures are also mild all through the year while the beach areas are so many that you will have a hard time deciding on what to settle for. The sands are also fine which only works to elevate the popularity of the area for holidays that are simply unforgettable.

The Canary Islands consist of 7 islands that are quite large. There are other smaller ones. The major islands consist of Gran Canaria, La Palma, el Hierro, and Tenerife, la Gomera as well as Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. The minor islands are lobos, Alegranza, Roque Del Este, Graciosa as well as Montana Clara. The most amazing thing about the Canary Islands is the landscapes. Every island has its individual landscapes. This is because of the volcanic origins of the islands.

Romans and Greeks reported the archipelago terming it the happy islands. It is believed to have been the home of the Atlantis which is quite legendary. The initial inhabitants of the islands are the Guanches. They are white skinned and are quite tall.

The islands became a part of the territory of Spain sometime in 1496. Columbus ships anchored here as they travelled to the new world.

The Canary Islands’ climate can be simply referred to as eternal springtime. The temperatures vary as the seasons change. The change is some 6oC.  Average temperatures at the islands can be said to be 18o-24oC. The area is therefore the best place to enjoy water based activities including swimming. It is also quite a good place for sunbathing and the best news yet is that this can be done at absolutely any time of the year.

The location of the islands is not too far from the tropic of cancer. The African coast is also not far off. The climate therefore remains to be subtropical. There are also some very high mountains that are very close to the beach areas creating the most spectacular sceneries ever seen. Some of the mountain peaks are snow caped adding to the attraction value. The water temperatures also vary as the seasons change but the drop is some 3 degrees Celsius.

Some of the islands may experience rains once in a while so be sure to carry extra clothing when touring the Canary Islands.

Spain has always been an interesting country to visit with its diverse and ancient cultures that have been practiced over the centuries. Many interesting and delightful cultures have been deeply rooted in various parts of Spain from the visits of Greeks, Moors, Romans and Phoenicians.

Languages

It is not surprising that Spain adopted a wide range of languages from its many influences. Today, the official or primary languages are Valencia and Castellano; however, these are not necessary to have the locals and tourists get along well. English and Spanish are commonly used although there is a host of local dialects in the various towns and villages around Spain.

Many of the nation’s dialects may sound complicated but they are encompassed by a rich culture with steep traditions. Those who stay on longer at a particular spot in Spain would tend to pick up some of the common terms quickly with the friendly locals.

Spain has a 77% population of Catholics with 1% being Protestants. However, it is considered a Christian nation from the days of old when the Christian Re-conquest came through to re-conquer much of Spain. Nevertheless, other religions that came by still flourish in Spain.

Traditions and cultures

One of Spain’s best cultures is bullfighting. This activity is considered a culture and tradition than a mere sport. It is a ritualistic Spanish culture that has evolved with time. The famous Flamenco is another interesting and deeply rooted Spanish tradition and culture. This passionate dance arises from Andalusia; purportedly by ancient gypsies performing flamboyant dances in colorful costumes accompanied by soulful guitar music which is known as the cante.

Spain is also famous for its art with the presence of great artists Pablo Picasso, Diego Velasquez, Al Greco and Salvador Dali. These churn out exquisite works of art that have astounded society all over the world with many pieces fetching millions of dollars. There are operas and cantatas to occupy the tourists all year long.

Spain enjoys a host of festivals and fiestas; there are more than 3,000 fiestas which are widely celebrated annually. These celebrations are usually lively and colorful with parades, music, dance, drinking and fireworks.

Another delightful Spanish culture is the tantalizing local cuisine that includes cured ham, fresh seafood, local produce and wine. The gastronomy delights offer the locals and tourists numerous opportunities to satisfy the stomach anytime of the day or night with the numerous restaurants, bars and pubs across the nation.

 Appreciating the Alhambra at Granada

One of the very popular Spanish sights for tourists is the Alhambra. This famous structure in Granada is an ancient fortress that existed when the Moors conquered the land. The Alhambra is strategically located up a hill which proves to be a challenging hike for some but does not deter those who want a unique experience of the ancient fortress.

Scenic walk

The hike up the hill to Alhambra is very scenic and one can relax while trekking up. It would be a breeze with the beautiful surrounding landscape as one walk up the hill to Alhambra. There is a green park along the way with small flowing streams in the midst of some wooded walk paths. This reflects the magnificent view one would enjoy at the plateau.

The Alhambra requires a ticket to enter. One enters through the Nasrid Palace before setting foot on the astounding Alhambra ground. This ancient palace is indeed a crown jewel that is majestic with grand views of Granada all around.

There are impressive ornate decorations that add on to the ancient structure’s majestic appearance. However, one can easily identify the building’s symmetry of elaborately decorated rooms and courtyards that are well maintained with lush greens and pools.

Historical structures

One of the historical buildings at the Alhambra is Charles V Palace which is most enchanting. This palace was built after the conquest of Alhambra by the Christians Re-conquest. The King of Spain ordered restoration work to restore the palace’s beauty which is seen today. Its round shape building is set within a square compound that offers a most unique structure.

The Alhambra displays many towers such as the Alcazaba which is an ancient citadel. Here, the Torre de la Vela offers a most panoramic view of the city for those who are challenged by its high stairs. One would also view the spectacular snow-capped Sierra Nevada from this tower. The Alhambra also offers the delightful Iglesia de Santa María with its unassuming structure that manages to secure a mysterious aura.

The Alhambra is not all about towers and fortresses; there are delightful summer palaces and gardens which have been well taken care of throughout the centuries. These are spread across a narrow valley of scenic grounds that are full of flower beds as well as orange trees. Symmetric pools and fountains are scattered around the palace with well-trimmed hedges.

Generalife

Similarly, there are the resplendent Generalife scenic grounds with a more laidback landscape. Nature is vibrant with bubbling streams and swaying green trees. All would enjoy a wonderful and refreshing stroll at this garden.

More Than Meets the Eye at Andorra la Vella

One of the lesser known towns of Spain is Andorra la Vella. This town is located at the eastern side of the majestic Pyrenees Mountains. From one angle, this mountain range looms majestically above Andorra la Vella to give it a most picturesque view.

Andorra is an ideal holiday destination for those who desire a diverse yet Spanish culture. With its strategic location near to France, it is not surprising to have many French visitors throughout the year.

Background

Andorra is the capital in Andorra Principality with 45% Spaniards, 33% Andorreans, 11% Portuguese and 7% French. This cosmopolitan community offers a diverse culture that is so rich and attractive.

Catalan is the main communication language spoken at Andorra with Castilian, French and Portuguese frequently heard. Andorra la Vella means Old Andorra which refers to its ancient origins.

The town was one of the region’s early settlements with numerous stoned streets and homes; it was called Barri Antic due to the simple homes of its early settlers. Andorra flourished easily and quickly over time to be the cosmopolitan darling of Spain with quite a bit of modernism although its ancient quarter is retained to add on to the charm of the town. This section allows visitors to get a feel of the medieval times of Andorra with all its mysticism and beauty.

Architectural Delights

There are plenty of great architectural delights in Andorra la Vella. Near the ancient quarter lies the Sant Esteve church with antique structures that are incomparable in Andorra or its surrounding region. This 11th century church was built by the Romans; hence, the Romanesque architecture is very obvious. Several intriguing paintings hang inside this ancient church which sports fascinating designs on its interior. Both the interior designs and the paintings prove to be more than a casual visit or stopover at this church.

These are ancient art pieces that are unique and well painted which would amaze many tourists today.

The Amazing Alhambra at Grenada

One of the greatest treasures in Grenada is the ancient but magnificent Alhambra. It is one of the most exquisite Moorish architecture that can be seen today. Its lofty hill position makes it stand out all thea more as one of the intriguing sights in Grenada. It would take tourists several hours to explore the Alhambra where the intrinsic designs and textures can be feasted.

Historical value

Grenada’s Alhambra is renowned as the best ancient Moorish architecture in Europe that has been well preserved for today’s viewing. This ancient fortress is magnificent in its structure that is second to none in the region. The Arabic term Alhambra means ‘the Red Castle’. Moorish poets have likened the Alhambra to a pearl among emeralds.

The strategic location of Alhambra enforces its value as a strong fortress of defense. The river flows at the north with the majestic and invincible Sierra Nevada. This fort was built by Sawar ben Hamdun in the 9th century who converted the smaller Alcazaba fort into the formidable Alhambra fortress.

The Alhambra was a very revered fortress serving as a royal residence with exquisite Arabesque furnishings and architecture.

However, the Christians Re-conquest took over the city in 1492 with Renaissance style changes on the architecture of the Alhambra. It soon became the winter palace of King Charles V with little Moorish architecture left in place.

In 1812, the French destroyed two of Alhambra’s towers; Napoleon nearly demolished the Alhambra but his plan was thwarted by a discontented soldier. However, a natural calamity did extensive damage on the Alhambra in 1821. Jose Contreras led a team to repair and restore the grandeur of the Alhambra in 1828.

Structural beauty

There are many beautifully designed sections in the Alhambra. One of them is the Lions Patio. It is a courtyard in a rectangular shape with 124 marble columns. Every arch of the gallery showcases exquisite Arabesques artwork. Twelve white marble lion statues stand majestically around a fountain at the center of the courtyard which is known as the Fountain of the Lions.

The biggest room inside the Alhambra is the Ambassadors Hall which is a reception area. In the past, it was used to welcome visitors during the Moorish kings’ rule. There are intricate designs on the walls and ceilings in the Alhambra depicting the heavens in gold, blue and white designs.

The two Sisters Hall contains 2 large slabs of smooth marbles with a fountain inside and a honeycombed dome ceiling that bespoke beautiful Moorish architecture.

Religious Significance at Santiago de Compostela

There are many towns and cities in Spain which are considered as ‘religious’ areas. These Spanish towns and cities such as Santiago de Compostela are just like Rome and Jerusalem. Santiago de Copostela or Santiago is considered as one of Spain’s most holy cities where hundreds of thousands of Catholic pilgrims come by for their annual absolution pilgrimage.

Historical significance

Santiago is the city where the famous Saint James apostle was renowned for his missionary work after Jesus was crucified. Santiago means James in Spanish; he was one of the apostles of Jesus who was beheaded in Jerusalem; however, his remains were taken to be buried in Galicia by the other disciples.

In the year 813, Santiago’s bones were exhumed and authenticated by a Christian hermit before they were placed in the Cathedral that was built by King Alphonso II.

Pilgrimage route

There is more than one route to experience the pilgrimage of St. James. The famous Pilgrimage Way can be via the French route entering Spain through the majestic Pyrenees Mountains. Alternatively, there is the Northern route via Spain’s Basque country or the Silver route which is the southern route via Andalusia. There is also the Portuguese route via Oporto and Tui which is a Galician city. Finally, there is the English route or the Maritime route via A Coruna or Ferrol from the north of Europe.

Whichever pilgrimage route is taken, there would surely be a lot of walking. Pilgrims are expected to walk a good portion of the pilgrimage route as a show of sincerity in their faith. The Saint James pilgrimage route is an Appalachian Trail to display one’s absolution. A pilgrim is required to complete at least the final 100 km by foot; a bicycle or horse can be used to complete the final 200 km. A small boat can be used to complete 40 nautical miles before walking to the designated Pontecesures port.

The pilgrimage is complete at Santiago where a religious ritual is required before entering the cathedral.

Religious observations

Once the pilgrims enter the cathedral from their completed walk, pilgrims qualify to touch any marble pillar available or bump one’s head on any revered sculptured figures as an act of repentance and reverence.

The pilgrims are to face the image of St. James which is on the altar before embracing it from its back. Pilgrims then move on down to the apostle’s crypt to sight the silver box containing the apostle’s remains. With the completion of these routines, the pilgrims can collect the La Campostela Latin certificate from the Pilgrimage office.

Interesting Offerings from Andalucia

One of Spain’s biggest Autonomous Communities is Andalucia which comprises the provinces of Seville, Huelva, Córdoba, Malaga, Jaén, Almeria, Cádiz  and Granada.

Each province of Andalucia holds its own fascinating culture and traditions with a host of ancient monuments from Moorish, Roman and Celtic eras. The towns and cities are set against beautiful natural landscapes of hills, mountains, sea and beaches.

Each city in Andalucia has specific offerings to entice the tourists as these cities compete to be the best in Andalucia.

Spanish insights

The history of Andalucia is colorful and long through the many centuries it has been occupied by various influences. The Moors who were of Arabic and Berber descent occupied Andalucia for about 800 years with a lot of culture and traditions instilled and lived out even till today. Civilization was said to be refined in the Middle Ages especially at Granada, Cordoba and Seville. However, the Christian Reconquesta remained a strong influence in later years after recapturing the region.

Granada has a lot of well preserved Moorish monuments that reflect the strong Muslim influence at that province with the building of the Alhambra. This is the biggest and most impressive palace in Europe. Seville showcases spectacular Gothic cathedrals with some of the largest in the world.

Huelva conducts its fishing activities with vigor as an important regional port that is surrounded by quaint villages and towns with much of the natural beauty around.

Activities

There is plenty to do and see in Andalucia. Its many villages, towns and cities can stop one at their tracks with the myriad of activities available at each place. Strolls and trekking activities are plentiful on the beaches, forest reserves or at the mountain ranges. Skiing and skating are available on the Sierra Morena and Sierra Nevada.

Tourists would be enthralled by Spain’s traditions and cultures like flamenco dancing and bullfights. However, there is no lack of festivals and fiestas which are vibrantly celebrated throughout the year.

The Andalucian sacred pilgrimage procession is well attended from all over Spain as well as outside. Many tourists come as observers and participants. There are Lent in February and the Semana Santa in March with Good Friday and Easter April that comes with carnivals and bull runs.

Many of these fiestas and festivals are vibrantly celebrated with dancing, music, food and fireworks. There are long street processions with elaborately decorated processions and parades as participants are donned in their traditional costumes.

The Plaza Mayor of Madrid

The Main Square also commonly referred to as Plaza Mayor in Spanish is a major monument in Spain. It was constructed under the command of Philip II and was erected on a former Arab origin market just outside city walls and over an old lake’s dried bed. This was soon after the king chose Madrid as the best capital for his kingdom and wanted to have a monumental square where the city’s shows and fairs could be held especially for his very important visitors.

The square was built in sections with the bakery house also known as the Casa de la Panaderia being the first building to be completed. This was especially done for baker’s guild and the town hall that is now across the plaza had to stay for thirty more years before being completed. The buildings of the square came with a total of six floors and the most amusing thing is that they were completely made of wood. A fire however gutted the buildings in 1790 and it is when it was reconstructed using stone.

The Plaza Mayor is now quite impressive with mural paintings for its decoration. This is all thanks to a restoration and clean up exercise that was undertaken in 1992 and it is now a monument that deserves to be visited by all. It is quite an impressive piece of architecture but the historical value is what has made the square a popular attraction in Madrid.

The best thing about choosing Spain as your ideal holiday destination is that it has so much to offer. It is a combination of both natural and man made features all of which make the major tourist attractions of the country. You will find something interesting to see, do and learn while in the country regardless of the region that you have chosen to spend most of your holiday time.  Madrid is an outstanding city of Spain and the fact that it is the capital makes it even more popular among tourists.

There are lots of other monuments that you can enjoy in Madrid. You can add a spice to your holiday by taking part in the annual events taking place in the different months and also trying out new cuisines not forgetting getting some night time entertainment. A holiday in Madrid is bound to be most enjoyable and it is recommended that you take the time to enjoy everything that the city has for you.

However, each town’s sherry production differs. El Puerto’s sherry is more the finos and amontillados type and Sanlucar’s sherry offers different flavors and ranges like the manzanilla.

Main industry

Hence, Jerez is renowned for its sherry production in its vast and fertile countryside that is inhabited by sherry and brandy vineyards. This sherry and wine industry is Jerez’s main commercial lifeline since its early production during the Anlo-Andaluz generations.

The wine and sherry industry is booming well to contribute positively to the region’s economy and international renown. It is no wonder that ‘Jerez-Pura Andalucia’ is a big hit as the town slogan to refer to the abundantly beautiful rich vineyards and large estate lands in the midst of grand palaces and traditional Spanish culture such as bull fighting and flamenco.

Flamenco Culture in Spain

Flamenco is synonymous with Spain as with bullfights; every Spaniard embraces the flamenco as part of the rich Spanish culture in the form of an exquisite art. This tradition is unique to Spain with a lot of pain and suffering that the performer is subjected to in order to transform it into perfection.

Unique tradition

The locals call Flamenco ‘Sevilliana’ as it was purportedly originated from Seville. This dance and song performance stands excellently as an exquisite Spanish art through its expression in song (cante), dance (baile) and guitar playing (guitarra).

Spanish gypsies have claimed to be the originators of the Spanish flamenco with an active participation throughout the decades. This is how a Spanish tradition is normally survived; the Andalusian dances and songs are passed down from generation to generation including the Flamenco.

Over time, Flamenco Schools were established in Jerez and Cadiz Triana until its popularity peaked between 1869 and 1910.

Forms and fame

The Flamenco started off with mere vocals and accompanied rhythmical clapping of the hands called the ‘toque de palmas.’ Reputable musicians and composers added on guitar music accompaniment later. Today, there is some jazz, salsa and bosa nova flavor to the traditional Flamenco.

The Flamenco tradition was quite perfected at its peak as a definitive art form which was highly sought in cafes cantantes or music cafes all over Andalucia.

There is a more serious form of Flamenco which expresses deep feelings known as the ‘cante jondo’.  There is more guitar accompaniment through a unique Flamenco guitar.

Vocals or singing came into the Flamenco between 1910 and 1955; hence, the birth of the ‘opera flamenca’ came on. Fandangos as well as cantes music also arose as accompaniment to the vocal flamencos.

Various flamenco artisans would frown at such modifications and additions which are not considered true flamenco; these are viewed as drastic and untraditional modifications to the art of flamen
