Ciudad quarter

On another end of Ronda is the Ciudad quarter with a most picturesque square known as the Duquesa de Parcent plaza. This is where the Santa María La Mayor Catholic Church is situated. It now stands over the previous Arab mosque; hence, it sports a Moorish external that displays the graceful Moorish, Renaissance and Gothic styles combined.

There is still a belfry on the old minaret top; the interior displays Arabic calligraphy on the arches, street door and other parts. The ancient Arab mihrab or more commonly known as prayer room lies exposed.

Casa de Mondragón was once the Moorish kings’ palace which is open to the public for viewing today. There are three patios which have preserved stuccowork with a fantastically carved ceiling. A local museum stands tall housing much of the local archeology and Moorish artifacts in Ronda.

Another interesting museum is further away from La Ciudad which houses Juan Antonio Lara collections. This was an avid collector of antique clocks, ferienhaus in spanien armaments, pistols, cameras, cinematographic and musical instruments since childhood. But there are some unique archeological finds placed in the museum.

The Alcázar

Today, a school has taken partial occupancy of this fortress which was once virtually impregnable. The Moorish kingdom stood strong and solid until 1485 with the Alcázar before Granada fell.

The main town gates are of magnificent Moorish architecture. These were erected during the Hapsburg emperor’s reign.
