Holidaying in Villajoyosa

Overview

The colourful and charming town of Villajoyosa is situated in the Valencian community in South East Spain, and is part of the province of Alicante. Local transport routes and services to the town ensure it is easily reached for a day trip or longer stay, with local buses and trains departing often in both directions.

The area benefits from a mild winter climate and pleasant summers cooled by a sea breeze, thanks in part to the shelter offered it by the surrounding mountain range. This makes the town an ideal location for a winter or spring break with minimal rainfall and without the crowds of summer.

Like many towns in the area Villajoyosa, which means ‘jeweled village’ in local dialect, has a charming Old Town which is exceptionally pleasing to the eye thanks to the vibrant facades of the fishermans' houses in an eye catching range of colours. The river Amadorio runs through the town and the centre enjoys a range of medieval sites and gothic architecture. Famous for its production of chocolates, you are never far from a café serving delicious hot chocolate beverages and sweets – some of the best are found in the main square of the old town.

Although the town experienced a period of decline during Moorish occupation, it was in the 15th century granted Royal Status, a prestigious title meaning the port was allowed to trade throughout the region. Christians were resettled in the area following the reconquista, but the marks of Moorish rule can still be found in the area. Numerous forts and towers are worth visiting, as well as the city walls.

Things to do

Keeping with local tradition, the town offers those looking for a carneval atmosphere much choice. Park Guell

Overview

The wonderful Park Guell in Gracia, Barcelona is the work by the famous architect Gaudi who is also credited with designing the fabulous (but also incomplete) Sagrada Familia Cathedral in the same city. Guell called on Gaudi to create a relaxing and high-end park away from the industrial dangers of the city for the upper middle classes in the city at the beginning of the 1900s. Guell intended the park to be a high end housing development modelled on the fashion in english at the time, however this never transpired although Gaudi lived in the park in the current museum with his family for a time. The main features of the park are the stunning mosaic and statues which draw the eye and are designed in the modernist style of their creator. One example of this is the famous multi coloured lizard statue who adorns the entrance to the park.

Location and access

The park, which is on a prime hilltop location, is popular with locals and tourists as it offers superb views over Barcelona and the surrounds and can be accessed for free year round and reached easily by an extensive network of public transport. The park is designed to maximise the use of space and to showcase Gaudis designs in an area removed from the busy city.

A prime example of art nouveau, the park was declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 1984 and boasts almost 3kms of walkways and trails. The trademark colourful mosaic that adorns the walls and pavements are made from broken pottery and tiles. Gaudi ensured they were used throughout the park and provides a pleasing sight. Access to the park can be gained by metro or bus, but either way you should be prepared to walk and climb a little to reach the fabulous entrance steps. The park can become busy and crowded in the popular summer months as locals and tourists alike seek to escape the heat and fumes of the big city in search of relaxation. Isolated areas of the park allow for reflection and contemplation and the area is in a prime position to watch the sun go down. Children will delight in the colourful animal sculptures and columns and it is also a lovely place for a romantic walk. Either way, locations vacances espagne  the park is without a doubt a ‘must see’ in the wonderful city of Barcelona.

La Alcazaba

La Alcazaba is an ancient Moorish military fortification that was built in the first half of 11th century on the ruins of a Roman fortress. It was built to protect Malaga from the outside and it used to have three impressive protecting stone walls, though until now only two of them have maintained the passage of time. Originally the fortress consisted of three palaces and more than 100 towers and it is one of the largest military fortresses in the country. When the Moors built the fortress, they were partly using the Roman materials and some parts of the Roman building, such as the beautiful Roman theatre that can be still found in the foreground of the fortification, has also remained there until today. Though there is an interesting combination of the Roman and the Moorish culture in La Alcazaba, it is one of the best patterns of Moorish architecture we can find nowadays.

Today this place has become an important part of the tourism of Malaga. Whatever you are interested in; in La Alcazaba you can definitely find something you will find exciting. Most importantly it is an astonishing remain of the ancient times and thus it can be extremely good place to go to if you are interested in history, culture and architecture of Spain or particularly Malaga. If so, you should also visit the Archaeological museum, which is placed right in the fortress. There you can find many valuable ancient findings from various time periods of Spain.

The fortress has beautiful vivid inside gardens with impressive alleys. When you will see the gardens, there is a great possibility that you will feel like in an enormous magnificent botanical garden rather than in a military building. If you are interested in seeing this, you should visit La Alcazaba during the spring months of the year, though it is worth seeing throughout the whole year. It is also the best time to visit Malaga, if you are not a lover of very hot summers or not very warm winters.

La Alcazaba is a breathtaking monument you will probably never forget. Nowadays there aren’t many ancient places that have still remained the unique medieval atmosphere. What is also great about location blanes is that it is settled right on a hill in the centre of the city of Malaga. From this building you can have a great overview of the city, the sea with the port and even the African coast.
