Although splitters are provided by the service providers along with the ADSL modems, few users use these splitters thinking that it is useless exercise to connect a splitter or filter for separation of data signals from the voice. Before coming to the point let me inform you if you belong to the category of people who keep splitters or filters aside instead of using them at their place. Both splitters and filters function in similar way with a difference. ADSL signals are divided from voice signals by the splitter whereas voice signals are allowed to pass through filters. ADSL signals are blocked by the filters.Hence, a splitter is must to install where same line is shared by both ADSL modem and a telephone receiver. Splitter avoid frequent disconnection from interrupting incoming phone calls as well as help instant connectivity in the beginning of internet session. Splitter also reduces high frequency noise disturbances caused by ADSL modem while receiving a telephone call when ADSL modem is on. Not only this, distortion in television signals is also experienced while using broadband modem with WiFi router if same line is used by ADSL modem, telephone or any other device.

Like most people, I considered splitter an unnecessary tool too and did not use it for sharing same line for phone and ADSL modem. My service provider has advised me to use splitter to avoid disconnection due to intermittent incoming calls. When I experienced problems on this ground I installed splitter in between phone and ADSL modem but it did not provide full immunity from disconnection. Later on I realized that problem was due to my telephone receiver (Phone set). On the advise of experts, telephone receiver was replaced with a new receiver. This arrangement provided me a great relief and problem of disconnection had a rare occurrence. Encouraged by results, all the loose points of the

phone line were tightened inside the house and frequent interruptions became a thing of past until I was informed by other members that in my absence there has been a thunder strike in the area and technician told that splitter was creating a problem since then.

I would utilize the opportunity to inform my readers the nature of problem that may be caused by poor functioning of a splitter. A splitter used for dividing ADSL signals from the voice typically has three labels on its body. One side of the splitter has one label where cord from the telephone receiver is inserted and it is labelled as "Phone". Other side of the splitter has two labels namely "Line" and "ADSL". Line coming from outside of the home is inserted to the socket labelled as "Line" and another socket adjacent to "Line" is labelled as "ADSL" and one end of the cord connecting ADSL modem is inserted in this socket. In my case "Line' and "ADSL" sockets were functioning well but socket labelled "phone" got short circuited and did not function properly. I did the same thing that is expected from a layman. I opened the cover of splitter and connected the points of "phone" socket from the line. In this way, both of the devices worked properly but reduced the voice of caller in the phone receiver. I tried to find a splitter from the market but did not succeed. Splitters available in the market were simple telephone line splitters that too without any electronic circuits. Telephone separator do not work for ADSL signals since they are made to divide just voice signals.

Incidentally, a friend of mine changed ADSL modem and purchased new ADSL modem. I requested my friend to give me the spare one. I installed this splitter replacing the older one and this make me realize the importance of a splitter. Now I don't have problems in connecting internet or receiving incoming calls while using same telephone line for browsing net and receiving calls. I'll suggest all the viewers of this hub to use these tiny tools because these are designed by experts for users' convenience.
