Ringette is a womans icegame. Itīs something like icehockey, but the stick is different.
The stick is straight. Itīs like a hockeystick without blade and we donīt have a puck.
Our "puck" is like a blue bagel. There is also many others rules, for example in ringette you canīt
tackle. Ringette isnīt as physical game as icehockey, but it is maybe little faster game than ice-
hockey. Ringette is a game of joy, mind and team-work.
"The father" of ringette is Sam Jacks who developed ringette in Canada in Ontario in 1963.
Juhani Wahlsten brought ringette to Finland in 70īs. International Ringette Federation (IRF)
institute in 1986.
First ringettes world championshiptour was in Canada. Then there were 8 team from 3 countries:6
Canadas team, USA and Finland. Finland came 7th, after Canadas teams. Next world championshiptour
was in Helsinki in 1992. This time there were 7 teams from 6 countries: two Canadas team, USA,
Finland, France, Sweden and Russian. This time Finland get bronze. In 1994 Finland won world
championship in USA. It was Finlands first teamgames adultdivisions world championship.
In 1996 Canada won Finland in overtime 6-5 in Stockholm. In 1998 wasnīt really world championship
tour, but then was a Eurotour when Canada and Finland played 5 games agains. Finland won Canada 3-2.
And now in 2000, when world championshiptour were here in Finland, Finland won world championship!
Almost half of this national team were from my ringettsociety Tuusula Ringette; 7 players and a
coach like a captain Katja "KK" Kortesoja and a goalkeeper Kirsi "Hilu" Järvelä and the coach
Krister "Krisu" Åberg. Tuusula Ringette have won Finland championship five times in a row.
