St.Alphege of Canterbury: A red field upon which is depicted the axe (in gold and silver) with which he was martyred. Alphege, Archbishop of Canterbury, was taken prisoner by invading Danes and subjected to horrible torture. Finally a soldier had compassion on him, and stepping forward killed him (out of mercy) with an axe, to end his awful suffering.
