Sports Hi-Lites

        Last night, February 28, 2003, the boys beat Cheyenne Wells in a good game with the final score of 60-41 to advance to the championship game  against Springfield. You could just feel the intensity in the Lamar Community Center gym. The teams were very evenly matched and the score remained close from the beginning to the end. The fans from both sides were on their feet as Las Animas came from behind in the last few seconds to win 58-55.  It was a wonderful victory for the Las Animas Trojans. The boys were awesome and were well coached by Head Coach Rance Melton, (son of Las Animas Alumni, Lonnie Melton and Carla Phillips Melton) and assistant coaches, John Abdulla and Houston Reed.

         What a night for the team! Las Animas fans watched through tears and cheers as the team was awarded the 2A District 4 Trophy plaque. The team members are from left to right in the above picture and are as follows: Front row, Sophomore, Cody Allen, Seniors, Diogenes Molina, Andrew Abdulla, Jeff Varner, Zack Atkins, Kiel Torrez, and Sophomore, Trevor Wilson. In the back row are Freshman, Kyle Root ( my grandson), Sophomores Ryan Eck and Charles Alvidrez who is barely visible standing behind Kiel and Trevor. With their 20-2 record, they will advance to the regional game in Trinidad next week. Fans have very high hopes for this team to go all the way as they have had an outstanding season and they are a GREAT team.

Sadly, the Lady Trojans, had some bad luck and were defeated by Swink in close game. (sorry for no score, but I didn't get it down and both the Pueblo Chieftain and Rocky Preps did not have a score, only the win for Swink). So with that loss, the Lady Trojans were out. They played their hearts out and it was a sad loss as they were ranked #1 in 2A District 4. Las Animas fans can expect great things next year from the Lady Trojans. The Las Animas Trojans are off to Regionals and then on to State! YEAH !!
