Notes for EDWARD STEUER:
He was a brilliant lawyer. He also was a horrible drunk. When he was drunk, he
was an awful, terrible, horrible poker player. He was addicted to gambling. His
"friends" knew this and plied him with booze before his poker games. Needless
to say, he lost the family "Jewels" literally! He lost much of the money that
he and his wife inherited from her father. He committed suicide absolutely broke,
except for some stock he left to his wife, Rebecca. This kept his daughter, Gazella,
from going to college, which perhaps made her the bitter person she became.
He wasn't a bad person-only when he was drunk, and then, only on poker nights.
According to his grandson, Ed Reid, "There had to be something Good about Edward,
since three of the four grandsons were all named Edward." There was himself, Edward
Rosenberg (Reid), R. Edward Kaplan and Edward "Buddy" Steuer.
He was in the first Law Class Graduation of Western Reserve in Cleveland, Ohio.

She was a very good student and salutarian of her high school class. Her father
loosing all the family's money affected her deeply. Perhaps this is what made
her the bitter person that she became. Her father died before she got married.
Her MS didn't manifest itself until about 1926, Ed was about 6 yrs old and Howard
was about one year old. It must have been dormant for many years. Her maternal
uncle, Isadore Gelb, also had it. MS hasn't manifested itself in later generations
to date (2002).

He felt that his mother didn't much care for him. This was confirmed by an Aunt. He tried to gain her approval to
no avail. Ed was a better student than his brother, Howard, and he believes that
he has done more with his life than he did. He & his brother were always very
very close. He used to carry his other physically into the natorium to watch him
swim when he was in meets. He was very close with his father.
One of his favorite people was his grandmother Rebecca Gelb Steuer. They spoke only German to his
Granma Gelb, until the day she died.
He was a Naval Aviator in WWII. His permanent rank at discharge wa Lt. (Sr. grade). It's unknown as to why it went down one
rank at discharge. He spent most of his 4½ yrs in the service and he liked it
very much. He met his wife in Cleveland when he was home on his graduation from
the Cadet Corps. He was at his second cousin's, Helen Eisenberg, house waiting
for her to finish dressing, so they could go to dinner and a show when Marian
(Stotter) called to talk to Helen. He answered the phone. Helen had been waiting
to introduce them. They went to marian's house first, and he and Marian had their
first date the next night. They were married six weeks later in Corpus Christi,
Texas.
San Francisco, California is his favorite place in the USA. His first wife's
paternal uncle, Dr. J. Stotter, was a paulbearer at Dr. Ignatz Friedman's funeral
(Ed's grandfather's step-brother).
