Good Intentions

Sandy opened the door to the chemistry lab and her long lapin ears stood up, searching for any sound. “Alex, are you here?” She asked, closing the door behind her. A loud crash from the adjoining room caught her attention and she rushed back to see her friend picking up a tray of science tools he must have knocked to the floor by accident. Upon seeing her enter, the otter smiled brightly and motioned her over, picking up the last of the tools and setting them on the counter.

“Hello Sandy! I am glad you came.” He walked over and gave her a hug before she could respond. She gave a gentle squeeze back in greeting and then let go. “What is going on Alex?” She asked. “I was studying for my English test when I got your message. What is so urgent?”

The otter grinned and scampered over to the desk, taking a large beaker of a semi-transparent, bubbling liquid. He scampered back and handed it to her. “This is. Go ahead and take a sniff.” She did as he suggested and was rewarded with a sweet and familiar scent.

“Ginger ale?” You called me here, across campus, on an urgent matter, at elevel at night, for soda?” Alex shook his head quickly.

“Of course not. I did something remarkable Sandy! I solved the biggest problem to soda drinkers across the world! I invented belch free soda!” Sandy just looked at him and arched an eyebrow, so he went on. “I made all the bubbles stick together once you drink the soda, and it collects in your stomach. No bubbles will come up, hence no burps!”

The rabbit looked at the vial thoughtfully. “How many of these have you drank?” he tapped his chin. “Oh, about ten cans worth or so. Why do you ask?”

Sandy looked up. “Well….if the gas collects in your stomach and can’t get out, then what happens when so much gas collects that your stomach cannot hold it?”

Alex scratches his ear in thought and was about to speak when his hands went to his stomach and he froze. His eyes seemed to get larger and he suddenly opened his mouth and let out such a belch, that the windows and glass beakers shook, and Sandy was forced to turn away and cover her ears. After a full ten seconds, the monstrous sound finally stopped, leaving a shocked looking Alex.

Sandy shook her head and sighed, walking to the door. “I am going back to study. Goodnight Alex.” With that she left, closing the door quietly behind her. Finally Alex regained his senses and shouted after her, “Well at least it didn’t come out the other end!”
