Chapter 4

Lucy stood in front of the mirror in the guest room. She was getting ready for the dance. She wouldn't say she looked Beautiful or even pretty. She had never thought herself that. She wore a light pink dress that made her dark skin stand out. It fell off her shoulders slightly and was quite low cut. Lace gloves that perfectly matched her dress reached her elbows. Her hair was done up in a few braids with ringlets that hung over her shoulder. A silver oval locket hung around her neck.
Lucy slipped her purse strings around her wrist and wrapped a lace shawl around her shoulders. She quietly walked down the stairs. She was obviously the only one ready. Lou and Emma were still in Emma's room fixing Lou' s hair, Teaspoon and the Boys were still in the bunk house. So Lucy sat down on the sofa and began reading what Jimmy would call a silly dime novel. It probably was, but Lucy believed every word.
After about ten minutes Emma and Lou finally came down. "Are the boys not ready yet?" Lou asked. "No, I suppose they aren't''. Lucy answered. "Well Louise, I suppose this gives you more time to think of the name you'll use tonight." Emma commented.
"How about, Gwena Maria Whitley?" Lucy asked. Lou shrugged, she was not a big fan of that name, but not wanting to hurt Lucy she said, "Well that is a fine name, But I had something different in mind." Lucy realizing her mistake quickly said, "Oh of course Lou. I dont really like it either." They all laughed. "Good. I was thinking more like Cora Kidd. " Lucy felt her smile turn to a frown before she could stop herself she said. "Please Lou any name but that one." "Why?" Lou and Emma asked together. "That was the name of someone I used to know." Emma and Lou didn't miss the look of pain that crossed Lucy's face. "Cora Kidd or just Cora or just Kidd?" Lou asked." Her name was Cora Kidd. Thats the odd part about it. Why did you say that name?"
" I knew a girl in the orphanage by that name." Lou answered. " Who was she to you?" Lou asked. Emma quickly scolded her." Lets not talk of this now Louise, Perhaps some other time, I believe I hear the Boys." Lucy sighed in relief. This was not the night to drag up bad memories. The boys walked in breaking Lucy's thoughts. "Lets go dancin" Cody shouted when he walked through the door. They all laughed and left the house.
