why living for yourself is the same as living for the devil

I read an article about a parent who was appalled when his kid came home from trick-or-treat and found a leaflet in the bag discouraging him from reading books that lead to witchraft. But is it wrong to discourage kids from witchcraft? no one is going to be fooled into becoming a satanist from seeing a vision of a red guy with horns & a pitchfork. they would only be fooled if the deception was more subtle. for example, most witches think they are using their powers to do good. the biggest trick from the devil is we move on an idea and justify it with our selfish motives, not realizing this: you don't need to serve the devil as long as you are serving your selfish nature, because it brings the same result- alienation from God. Or even if we say we are including God, we sometimes are still calling the shots. So He's not involved as God practially, but only in name so we can once again justify OUR ways.
this is the deceptiveness of sin and we see the effect of it everywhere. repentence is the cure. before you cynicalize that statement, think. What is wrong with repentence, and why is our first inclination to minimize it's application to us? Because the sin-nature is so ingrained in us that we reject it as acceptable. Anything to let our pride prevail. But as the old song says, ya gotta serve somebody.
