Hillbilly Bob Fuller's Oldtime Country Music Association meet there every Monday Nite. This group of acoustic musicians, fans and supporters have been meeting in various niteclubs around Montréal since 1966. Playing their brand of American Country Music they revive the classic songs by Artists such as Hank Williams, Kitty Wells, George Jones and other singers based in Nashville. No piano or drums on Bob's stage where he has reined supreme for forty years. Guitars, bullFiddle, banjos, mandolins, lap-steel, wahboard or harmonica only. To qualify as OLDTIME repertoire a song had to be over 25 yearsold, so all of the new country was definately off limits. It started for me a quarter century ago at the Blue Angel Café where my father was a patron. One nite he asked me to meet him down there and then soon after I got there arranged that I sing a Bobby Bare song called "Detroit City". I was no stranger to the stage having played since highschools in the sixties and the down home feel of the country music made me a fan of the music and the jam. So I returned evry monday nite to sing more songs and learn how to play country style on the big Bass. Bob even let me take it home to my digs on Aylmer St. There I could practice with it during the week, as long as it came back for showtime. In 1982 I wrote a song modeled after an oldtime country music classic and used the Blue Angel as a background for the story. I sang it every chance I could and even though it didn't qualify it was allowed because it talked about the now famous country music institution on a Montréal Monday. Well although it still doesn't quite qualify for OLDTIME status yet the song got sung once again before an appreciative audience. After an absence of nearly 5 years Steve whateverhisnamisnow hits a home run with a home made song and sells 5 CDs to an eager group in front of the stage. I called Craig Morisson in the afternoon to say that I was interested in going down to the present location of the Oldtime Country Music at the Wheel Club on Cavendish just below Sherbrooke W. I knew my musical buddy was a regular there but being so close to Christmas I wondered if he had not gone to visit family on west coast for the Holidays.. I also phoned another old band-mate guitarist Ted Danko, to ask for his presence also and both men assured me they would be there to meet me. We all took turns playing with the ensemble and Craig and I got up together when I played bass on his set. It was a night of rétrouvailles and also a chance to make new aquaintances. I was well received by the members and asked to come back and sing again. ____________________________________________________________________________ EMAIL: bigbobcountry@outlook.com ____________________________________________________________________________
