His purpose is to show source records for Hank's recordings in alphabetical order. The information may eventually be included in the next revision to Ed Guy's Hank Discography booklet (which can be purchased from Ed for $5.00 - if interested e-mail Ed at edguy2222@aol.com ) ...... Addtionally, if you are looking for particular Hank records do send your "wants" to Ed - I know he will do his best to honor your requests. Robert Ackerman Dec 23, 2005 Palmer, Alaska _____________________________________________________________________ ATTENTION HANK FANS - If you collect the "unusual" you may want to buy this replica of the original Hank Williams Sterling 201 (Never Again/Calling You). It is a bit unclear why these records were made - but some thoughts are that it was pressed to fill a void or to provide an inexpensive copy of a rare record. Ed Guy has six copies left at $20.00 each (plus $3.00 S&H). If you are interested please e-mail Ed Guy at edguy2222@aol.com for payment and shipping arrangements. It is believed that these unusual records were probably pressed in Southern California about 15 years ago by person or persons unknown and that 500 copies were made. It is known that they were being sold at Swap Meets (West Coast Flea Markets) for $15.00 in 1990. You are also encouraged to send Ed your "want lists". The personnel on hand were: Fred & Wesley Rose, the Willis Brothers, known as the Oklahoma Wranglers. The Wranglers consisted of three brothers; Skeeter Willis on fiddle, Vic Willis on Accordion, Guy Willis on Rythm Guitar & Chuck Wright on Bass Fiddle. These four musicians made up the "OKLAHOMA WRANGLERS". The Wranglers were the first to record on that historic day. They recorded four numbers and then broke for lunch at a restaurant called "The Powerwagon". There they were joined by Hank Williams and after they ate, all returned to the studio for another session. This time it was Hank's turn to record. He cut four sides, using the Oklahoma Wranglers as back-up with Hank playing his own "Martin". The songs were: Calling you; Never Again; Wealth Won't Save Your Soul; When God Comes and Gathers His Jewels. These four numbers were Hank's first on Sterling Records. February 11, 1947 found Hank back in the studio again recording another four songs for Sterling Records. This time I doubt very much if it was the Oklahoma Wranglers backing Hank, for the instrumentation is quite different from the earlier session. The Steel Guitar appears for the first time and the accordian is gone. Looking at the label on these recordings, I notice that on Hank's two releases from the second session, the Drifting Cowboys are listed as the back-up group; whereas, on the earlier two discs, the group is listed as "The Country Boys". My theory is that there was indeed a change of personnel. The four songs cut on the second session were: I Don't Care if Tomorrow Never Comes; My Love For You Has Turned To Hate; Honky Tonkin'; and Pan American. These are Hank's final recordings for Sterling Records Inc. Hank signed with MGM Records in May of 1947. The Sterling Masters being sold to MGM, were all subseuently re-released with the exception of one: Sterling No. 210 "HONKY TONKIN". The MGM release of this song was a new take. In closing, I'd like to say that my personal wish is that, someday, MGM/Polydor will see fit to release all these original tracks on an LP in TRUE MONO, as was orginally recorded, so that we may all share in the pleasure of hearing how Hank sounded way back thirty-three years ago. Your comments would be appreciated.
