The show to which 'everyone’s invited' is an initiative of the Guwahati Music Society to promote 'good music'. 'Country music is as good and earthy as Bihu songs. So we thought why not start this year's festivity with one of the biggest names in the genre?' said a member of the music society. 'Some may object to the concept but Bihu is all-encompassing and we have got positive response from the people,' he said. Bobby Cash is the first Indian ever to release a country music album in the country and is an international celebrity with a huge fan following across the world, especially Australia where he is among the top stars. Born Bal Kishore Das Loiwal, Bobby grew up and resides in Clement Town near Dehradun. Pinuel Basumatary, secretary of the Guwahati Music Society, said 'the society will present the legendary country singer with the aim of bringing something new to music lovers of the region'. The show, to be held under the open skies on the Kalakshetra lawns, will start at 6.30pm. The music society - an association of music lovers of the region - had earlier presented several classical music shows starting with its maiden piano and violin concerts in the city. Basumatary said the Guwahati Music Society was founded in 2001 'with the primary objective of creating opportunities for musicians to perform and audiences to listen to good music, both classical and contemporary, with particular focus on Western music'. About Bobby, he said the singer who is known as the 'Indian Cowboy' has single-handedly driven the country bandwagon in India. 'He is as good as they get and looks as much the typical country singer with a cowboy hat, leather jacket and black leather pants and Texan boots. Bobby has also drawn inspiration from masters like Jim Reeves, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard and Kenny Rogers.' His first country music album Cowboy at Heart was a bestseller. The 46-year-old Bobby is quoted as saying, 'I think country music is very close to the Indian psyche because country music is about life, roots, family, home and all of these things are close to the Indian heart. Once they listen to the words and music they understand that it is something they can identify with.' Come Saturday and music-lovers will know why country music is cashing in on the Bobby charm. The talented singer, who takes influence from music greats Jim Reeves, Johnny Cash and Kenny Rogers, has recently recorded his third album, which was released in Sydney yesterday (Wednesday). He will perform at the Hallam Hotel on Tuesday, 2 May. Since Bobby’s first visit to Australia in 2003, he has conducted ten musical tours across the country and this will be his eleventh. Bobby found himself the subject of a documentary when he first attended the 2003 Tamworth Country Music Festival. As India’s population had just passed the one billion mark and Bobby was the only man in India making a living playing country music, the short film was named ‘The Indian Cowboy...One in a Billion’. Bobby returned to Australia in June 2003 and recorded his first country music album - ‘Cowboy at Heart’. With new-found-Tamworth-friend Lawrie Minson in the producer’s chair, they managed to get some of the cream of the Australian music industry to play on the album - including duets with the legendary Smoky Dawson and Tania Kernaghan. Earlier this year he returned to the 2006 Tamworth Country Music Festival and last year attended the Country Music Association music festival in Nashville after being nominated for the CMA Global Artist Award. His latest album, ‘State of my Heart’, is a musical journey that explores his roots of country music. Bobby Cash is India's only country music artist, he is literally one in a billion. His recent nomination for CMA Global Artist Award is tribute to his achievements in the past two years. A pioneer in his own country, Bobby is the first Indian ever to release a country music album in India. An early introduction to country music through his Mother, and then from an Aunt who lived in Nashville, laid the foundation for this man's extraordinary talent. Bobby's home in Clement Town, Dehradun, where he still lives, became a kind of incubator for country music in India. "Country music was always played in our home. I picked up a guitar when I was seven years old and taught myself from what I was listening to. Jim Reeves, Johnny Cash, Don Williams were my heroes along with many other American country artists - I just love country music because country music is about real life. It's sentimental music. It is about family, it's about your mum and dad, about your roots, about your home-town. And these things are very, very close to the Indian heart." His debut Australian performance came in January 2003 at the Tamworth Country Music Festival. The fans flocked to see him and he became the talk of the festival. Since then he has returned to Australia on eight separate occasions to tour and record 2 albums. Bobby's first album 'Cowboy at Heart" was released in Australia in December 2003 and followed up with a second album last year, after fans demanded Bobby Cash unplugged. This album became appropriately titled, "Phoenix to El Paso". Universal Music India came on board last year and released Bobby's first album in India to coincide with his September tour spanning seven capital cities. He was also the subject of a documentary - "The Indian Cowboy... one in a billion", about his first trip to down under, released in Australia on ABC TV and The Discovery channel in India. Both screenings received rave reviews in each country which has led to a sequel being made by Gobsmacked Television who will follow Bobby to Nashville on the Friday 3rd of June.
