Antonia Bernath, 23, abandoned classes at the Old Vic Theatre School in Bristol to take up an offer from Bollywood for a lead role in Kisna. She plays the daughter of a deputy commissioner who has an affair with an Indian man from a modest background. The cross-cultural romance is set in May 1947, just a few months before the end of the Raj. The film is directed by Subhash Ghai, who has had several Bollywood hits in a career spanning 25 years. The leading man is Vivek Oberoi, one of India's most sought-after young actors. Reviewers had reservations about the film but raved about Bernath's performance. "Antonia is the best of the lot," said one reviewer. "She is endearing as well as stunning with a vulnerable face and has great acting talent. She is a scene-stealer." There will be a non-Hindi version of the film. "That has a kiss, but it's just a quick kiss," Bernath said yesterday. "Personally, I prefer the version without the kiss. It's more erotic." She is flying to America later this week to play Elvis Presley's wife Priscilla in a television film. Rhys-Meyers also featured in Mira Nair's Vanity Fair. Playing Priscilla is Antonia Bernath, our very own Subhash Ghai's discovery in Kisna! The duo star in an American television miniseries, Elvis, directed by James Steven Sadwith, about the life of Elvis Presley. The miniseries ends nine years before the King's untimely death in 1977. Rhys-Meyers has won good reviews for his portrayal of Presley.
