There were once at least thirty different subspecies of wolf. Most have become extinct. About five subspecies survive today. In England, the last wolves were wiped out by about 1500. A few still live in eastern Europe, India, Germany, Italy, Spain and the Middle East. Most wolves in North America are found in Alaska and Canada, but hunters say they are now almost impossible to find.

Wolves are carnivores (meat eaters) but they will eat other foods as well. Their diet ranges from big game such as elk and moose, to earthworms, berries and grasshoppers.

To avoid using too much energy catching their food, wolves prey on weaker members of a herd, such as old, young or sick animals. In summer, when the herds migrate, wolves eat mice, birds and even fish.

Wolves eat their food very quickly, to protect it from being stolen. They eat the best parts first, and come back later for the remainder, as they can't afford to be wasteful. They will hide food in the snow, or icy soil, which helps to preserve it, and protect it from scavengers.

Wolf pups are fed by the adults who disgorge fresh meat from their stomachs, or carry back fresh pieces of meat to the den.

Wolves weigh about 100 pounds and measure around 5 feet from nose to tail tip which makes them the largest member of the dog family.

Grey Wolves, a.k.a. Timber Wolves can now only be found in Northern Europe and Russia, Canada, and Alaska, and some of the northern United States. Grey Wolves live in groups called packs. The leader of the pack is called the Alpha Male and his mate is the Alpha Female. The lowest member of the wolf pack is called the Omega Wolf. The young wolves are called Juveniles.

A Grey Wolf can become 6.5 feet long and weigh 175 pounds. Grey wolves are not only grey, but white, black, and brown as well.

Wolves live in a number of areas. Some are caves, thickets, and holes. A wolves home is called a den. The only time a wolf uses a den is when they have pups. They sleep outside all year and do most of their traveling at night.

The Dire Wolf was the largest wolf which is now extinct.

Wolves communicate with other through facial expression and body positions. Wolves also howl to assemble the pack or to let a wolf pack approach know of their existence.
