Polar bears are around 11 feet long. They weigh about 1,500 pounds. They have whitish fur, which helps it stay hidden. Its neck is long and its head is small for its body size. Their toes are webbed like a duck's. Polar bears are the most powerful swimmers of all bears. They can swim 60 miles without rest. The long neck helps it keep its head out of the water when it swims.



The polar bear eats seals, beluga whales, nar whales, and walrus.

Polar bears live in the Arctic, near the Arctic Circle. Polar bears do not defend their home from other bears.

A pregnant polar female are the only polar bears who will hibernate. Other bears will build a shelter to stay warm during a winter storm, or cool during summer heat. Bear cubs will stay with the mother for the first 2 and 1/2 years.



Polar bears have been hunted to near extinction. Every year, 1,200 to 1,400 polar bears are killed. There are 20,000 to 40,000 polar bears. The number of bears has been dropping for many years due to hunting.
