THE POSTMAN

The Postman is my favorite Kevin Costner film. Beautifully directed and well acted, this film is the story of an involuntary hero. It is the inspiring tale of how a society which has degenerated to feudalism is rebuilt to a democracy through the dedication of a few people. Will Patton is wonderful as the anti-hero Bethlehem. Costner is "everyman", thrown into a battle he does not wish to fight, a hero by chance rather than choice. To top it off it has a wonderful soundtrack. (Add to this a surprise appearance by Tom Petty!!)

WATERWORLD
Much like The Postman, The Mariner from "Waterworld" is an involuntary hero. A loner, unexpectedly drawn into a search for a map, he battles greedy pirates. Also set in the future, the Mariner is unwittingly caught up in a search for dry land. The unwilling knight in shining armor with flaws, Costner sails the seas rescuing damsels in distress and capturing their hearts. Dennis Hopper plays his worthy nemesis in this film chock full of sea battles.

THE UNTOUCHABLES
This inaccurate historical recreation of Chicago during Prohibition and the reign of Al Capone is a visual treat. Kevin Costner, as Elliott Ness, is ably directed by Brian de Palma. Along with Sean Connery and Andy Garcia, Costner makes war on Al (Robert de Niro) Capone. A colorful and intense piece of film work, it's the one movie where Costner's woman plays a very small part. Mrs. Ness is never even given a first name. The interplay between Costner, Connery and Garcia is dramatic when needed and understated when required. This one also has a beautful soundtrack by Ennio Morricone.

Also stars Sean Connery, Andy Garcia, Charles Martin Smith and Robert De Niro.

DANCES WITH WOLVES
This is a beautiful if historically inaccurate account of how the West was stolen from the Natives by whites. Again Costner is a man on his own who is faced unexpectedly with a battle he is not really prepared for. Thrust out on his own into the western wilderness he discovers the man buried deep inside himself. By observing and interacting with one another the natives and the soldier become more than friends and develop love and respect for one another. Along with such fine actors as Graham Greene, Rodney Grant, Floyd Red Crow Westerman, Wes Studi, Mary McDonnell and Tantoo Cardinal, Costner turns in an excellent performance. In spite of its inaccuracy this is a film whose panoramic views of the west make it worth seeing. Well directed and lovingly made.

Among my other favorite Costner films are
"JFK"

An in depth account of the investigation of the assassination of President John Kennedy directed by Oliver Stone.
"Field of Dreams"
A heart warming story of a man who makes a miracle and finds himself.
"NO WAY OUT"
This is an exciting film of cold war espionage co starring Sean Young
Will Patton, and Gene Hackman.
"Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves"

"The War"
"A Perfect World".
"REVENGE"
