Craig Geddes is the new Australian Supergas drag racing champion.

He won the national title on Sunday at Eastern Creek, Sydney.

"I only started out three years ago, but last season went really well and this year has been sensational so far," Geddes said from his Ballarat home yesterday.

"Because of the national title win, we get the No.1 on the car for the next 12 months until the Supergas championships final round next year.

It's an all-round thing, with performance over the whole year taken into account," he said.

"At Eastern Creek, we clocked 9.90 in the last round.

The car has run 9.20 flat out and it's just a real buzz to win this title," Geddes said.

Geddes, who has been heavily committed to drag racing scene, has been praised by fellow sportsmen for his dedication.

"Money, hard work, travelling and all the rest is what it's all about," Geddes said.

"I'd like to thank my wife, Amanda, who put up with all the late nights in the shed while I was working on the car, my crewmen, Darryl Matherson and Noel Braurer, and Adam, my little brother, who was a great support."

Fellow Supergas racer Steve Smith said yesterday commitment was the main thing, because "You don't win overnight".

Smith, who, with Greg Hender, has gone under the 10 second barrier several times with rounds of 9.70s, recently competed at the Victorian championship.
